Sunset and vineyard view

  • Simple farm site with vineyard views 10 minutes’ drive from Cartaxo
  • Historic Santarém 25 minutes’ drive; Lisbon about an hour
  • Three-hectare property; flower-filled terrace with barbecues supplied
When you fancy the sound of a rural break with a slice of Portuguese viniculture heritage thrown in, take yourself off to Casa do Velho Ditado, 10 minutes’ drive from the ancient winemaking village of Cartaxo in the Santarém region. This simple and quiet spot is set on a three-hectare farm surrounded by vineyards; you’ll soon be relaxed on the flower-swathed terrace looking out over the vines. The short roster of facilities covers wifi, ice-pack freezing, a communal fridge/freezer and a shared shower block. As far as food goes, barbecues are provided – you can buy essentials in Cartaxo supermarkets – and should you want someone else to do the catering, there are bars and tavernas in the village as well. Dogs are welcome on site, and you have access to lots of walks through the vines and fields straight from the pitches. Should the mood take you, you can stop off at a couple of the historic wineries (known as ‘quintas’ in these parts) – to sample their produce too.

Local attractions

When you’re travelling with kids, keep them busy and active at Quinta das Pratas sports complex (five minutes’ drive), where there are a couple of public swimming pools. You can also stretch everybody’s legs (or paws) with a walk up to the viewpoint at Miradouro do depósito (15 minutes) for far-reaching views over the vineyards. A visit to historic Santarém (25 minutes) is like stepping back in time. Overlooking the River Tagus, this historic town has lots of Gothic-era churches to explore, as well as the Portas do Sol Gardens – with river views – and a photogenic hilltop castle captured by the first King of Portugal from the Moors in 1147. Although you’ve probably picked Casa do Velho Ditado for the near silence of its environs, if you wish to pick up the pace, head for Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém in Lisbon, just over an hour’s drive away. Another day trip could be to an Atlantic beach – the nearest is the cliff-backed, dog-friendly expanse at Praia d’El Rei (50 minutes).
