Don’t let the name fool you - North Holland’s Minicamping Valkenhof really isn’t that mini at all. There’s actually a rather generous amount of space around the site’s three fields; it’s the number of guests that the folk here have chosen to keep on the low side.
One excellent upshot of that is pleasingly spacious pitches where you can feel free to spread out and set up whatever awnings, outdoor furniture and barbecues you’d like to make your hols nice and comfy. Electrical connections are provided for each pitch, and there’s free wifi for a bit of browsing while you get the barbecue ready.
A second bonus of keeping things crowd-free is that kids and dogs should have plenty of space to run about and let off steam; there’s also a trampoline for small sorts who need a bit more bouncing. The small Broerdijksloot river runs past the site, with a little jetty where you can fish and/or watch the trains trundling past on the other side.
Riding bikes through this rural region is a fine way to spend a few days; two-wheeled travels can take you over to Medemblik, on the shores of the IJsselmeer, in around 20 minutes, and a bike’s a handy thing for picking up supplies from shops in Twisk, Oostwoud and Midwoud (all around 10 minutes away).
If all the splendid country scenery gets a bit too much, escape to the urban canals and cafés of Amsterdam or hit the famed cheese market in Alkmaar; both are about half an hour away by car.

Local attractions
Kick off your hols with a trip to the coast at Medemblik (10 minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ cycle). There’s a sandy beach here with sheltered water for swims and sailing; if it’s not really beach weather, aim instead for the town’s Radboud Castle, old bakery museum and steam train museum. More beaches are over on the North Sea side of things at Bergen aan Zee and Hargen aan Zee (both 40 minutes’ drive).
Kids keen to meet animals both small and large? Start with a trip to see the pretty flutterers at Vlindorado butterfly garden (20 minutes), then follow up with an exotic beast encounter at Landgoed Hoenderdaell (25 minutes), a sanctuary for big cats, lemurs and birds of prey.
If you’ve got classic Dutch sights on your wishlist, plan outings to the famed Alkmaar cheese market (half an hour) and Land van Fluwel (35 minutes), a theme park where you can wander among tulips even outside the area’s main flowering season. For canals, cafés, museums and a mind-boggling number of bikes, drive to Amsterdam in around half an hour, or scoot over on public transport in a little over an hour.
