  • Well-equipped site in the Chaam Forests, 20 minutes’ drive from Breda
  • Baarle-Nassau 15 minutes’ drive; Tilburg 25 minutes
  • Playground and kids’ club; cycle hire and swimming lake; restaurant
The Chaam Forests in the south of the Netherlands are the splendid setting for ’t Zand. And this family-friendly site – not content with being surrounded by a lush pine forest – goes one step further by also being on the shore of a peaceful lake. So that’s your early morning wild-swimming session sorted, then… A play area (with slides, swings and climbing frames) and a kids’ club with activities ranging from crafts workshops to sporting tournaments make ’t Zand a popular destination with families. (Dogs are welcome, too, by the way.) It’s also possible to hire bicycles and head off to explore the local area on two wheels – this being Holland, cycle lanes are impeccably maintained and usually flat and very manageable. A 10-minute bike ride takes you to the nearby village of Alphen, or (if you fancy a challenge) to the Alphense Mountain Bike Route. For those who prefer some light competition, there is an all-weather tennis court on site, and several golf courses within a 20-minute drive. The on-site restaurant serves sandwiches and salads at lunch, and modern European dishes at dinner (think burrata, carpaccio and bouillabaisse); alternatively, there are dining options in Alphen, in nearby Gilze (10 minutes’ drive) and, of course, in lively Breda (20 minutes). Amenities include a toilet/shower block (with facilities for disabled guests), a parent-and-baby room, a launderette (with dryers) and charging points for electric vehicles.

Local attractions

Baarle-Nassau (15 minutes’ drive) is an unusual municipality split between the Netherlands and Belgium (which calls its half Baarle-Hertog). White crosses painted on the cobbled streets denote the border, but chances are you’ll lose track of which country you’re in as you stroll around, hopping from brasserie to brewery. Start your visit to Breda (20 minutes) at the Grote Markt, a central square lined with cafés and restaurants with outdoor tables. Then head to the Grote Kerk, with its heavily decorated bell tower; to the Stedelijk Museum, with a permanent exhibition on the Orange-Nassaus (the Dutch royal family); or to the shaded Valkenberg park. The Textile Museum in Tilburg (25 minutes) runs exhibitions on materials, fashion design and industrial processes (such as a woollen blanket factory and Jacquard looms). On the outskirts of town, the Playland Beekse Bergen is an amusement park with a large swimming lake and a safari park.
