  • Relaxed Friesland site 10 minutes’ drive from Beetsterzwaag
  • National parks De Alde Feanen and Drents-Friese Wold 25 minutes’ drive
  • Quiet setting with clean facilities; golf course 10 minutes’ drive
What’s Camping Sparjebird like? Relaxed and friendly, for one. Conveniently positioned, for two. This green, family-run place is down a scenic road lined by tall trees, on the edge of the local woods, and within 25 minutes’ drive of two gorgeous Friesland national parks with scenery like rivers, canals, forests and drifting sands. Plenty of care has been taken to make Camping Sparjebird feel welcoming: the four toilets and showers, as well as the washing-up area, are all kept spotlessly fresh and clean. On summer evenings, they regularly host a communal firepit where all guests are welcome to gather and share their latest adventures. Those adventures are certainly easy to find in this part of Friesland. You’ll probably want to spend some time boating, biking or walking around De Alde Feanen National Park, 25 minutes’ drive away. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed eagles, watch the boats glide by from the villages or even pack your paddleboard if you want a scenic paddle. Back at base, it’s peaceful and quiet. The pitches are all equipped with electric hook-ups and water points. A lunch restaurant (open some days of the week) is a five-minute walk down the road. Plenty of other restaurants (plus a supermarket) are in Beetsterzwaag, 10 minutes’ drive away. An 18-hole golf course is there too, on the grand Lauswolt estate.

Local attractions

Five minutes by bicycle or car is all it takes to get to the nearest nature reserve for a stroll: Wijnjeterperschar is actually a Natura 2000 area, so your chances of spotting birds and bugs should be fairly good. If you have bigger visions in mind, such as walking through big forests (over 14,000 acres of it to be precise) and looking over drifting sands, then Drents-Friese Wold National Park (25 minutes’ drive) is also within striking distance. Beaches are a bit of a drive away (around 45 minutes for Harlingen and 50 minutes for Makkum), so if you simply can’t wait for a swim one afternoon, the good news is that there’s a gorgeous outdoor swimming pool just over in lively Bakkeveen (10 minutes). Those who fancy themselves a bit of city time can drive to Groningen (40 minutes). A large Gothic church, canals, a maritime museum (did you know this region has a long history of shipbuilding?) and the historic Grote Markt square are all there for you to stroll around.
