Whoever’s in your travelling pack, you’ll be most welcome at Dekema Equestrian Camping, in the Friesland countryside a couple of kilometres from the small town of Gorredijk. As the name suggests, this is a site that’s well geared up for horse owners, who can book stabling and spend their break trotting along local rural pathways. No horse? No problem – there are also some lovely walking and cycling routes in the surrounding area, including the long-distance Turf Route, which passes through Gorredijk. For other days out nearby you might head to Heerenveen or Joure for a bit of town time, or check out water-based activities in the landscapes of the Frisian Lakes or Drents-Friese Wold National Park. Back at base, you’ll be staying on simple pitches at a small site with lovely views over the neighbouring fields and pastures – just the place for some rural downtime. You’ll have access to toilets, showers, a wifi service and picnic tables, plus a covered seating area where you can seek shelter from the weather on damp days.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Very friendly people, everyone who worked on the farm said hello and was interested in what we had planned for the rest of the trip. Wish we had stayed more than one night!
Very close to the nearest town great sushi place.

Liked de snelle reservatie

Disliked De reis is niet kunnen doorgaan. Mijn vrouw is ziek geworden na haar imuuntherapie. Ze moet die om de zes weken volgen na de chemo. Hopelijk kunnen we in de nabije toekomst toch nog een paar dagen eens komen genieten.

Local attractions

Gorredijk (five minutes’ drive/ 10 minutes’ cycle) is your nearest source of shops and places to eat, and it’s also a lovely place to spend a bit of time. Fashionistas may like to hit the clothes stores at Rinsma Modeplein, while outdoor types take a walk along the canal path and culture lovers find out what’s on at the cinema and theatre in De Skans arts centre. A couple of other local towns worth visiting are Heerenveen (15 minutes’ drive), home to the Thialf stadium and a handful of museums, and Joure (20 minutes), which has a puzzle museum and the Swimfun pool complex. Sticking to outdoor activities, there are canoes to hire in the Drents-Friese Wold National Park (20 minutes) and some nice walks, bike rides and boat trips around the Frisian Lakes – the Tjeukemeer is probably the closest lake, at 25 minutes’ drive. Daredevils in search of more adventure can instead get up into the trees at Klimbos Overijssel (half an hour).
