Come here for active family holidays: Camping de Hondsrug is a big and modern family-friendly site with a wide range of facilities for all ages, all among the scenic landscapes and cycle paths of Drenthe. There are two big pools here to while away your time at, one indoors and one outdoors with waterslide and adjoining paddling pool. Kids have several play areas to try out, and activities to join in with via the recreation team; if that doesn't tire them out nice and thoroughly, there's also plenty of grassy space around the site to wander and play. Camping de Hondsrug is two kilometres from the village of Eext, 20 minutes' drive from Assen and half an hour from Groningen. Excellent eats of all sorts are in all three, and a snack bar with terrace; takeaway, and a grocery shop with fresh bread sales are all on site for lazy days and eves. De Hondsrug has spacious grass pitches and excellent amenities including hot showers and a washing-up area with dishwasher.

Local attractions

The site is in the Hondsrug part of the Drentic ridge, designated as a UNESCO geopark in 2013. Hiking and cycling are popular around the area's moors, sand drifts, forest and fens, and hundreds of kilometres of bike paths are around the Drenthe. If you're up for a day trip, drive along to the Drents-Friese Wold National Park 45 minutes away, one of the biggest preserved natural areas in the Netherlands. Bike paths snake all around the reserve's forests, heath and grassland; there are sands to stroll upon, and the park is teeming with wildlife including pine martens, adders and birds of prey. A 50-kilometre trail is set aside for mountain biking: ask for maps and info on this and other cycling trails in the park at the information centres in Appelscha and Diever. Drenthe is also known for its fishing: Braamsplas lake is two kilometres away, to fish for carp, roach, pike and perch.
