It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site in a wooded area just outside Markelo village
- Diepenheim 10 minutes’ drive; Sallandse Heuvelrug 20 minutes
- Swimming pool with paddling area; bike rental; nearby tennis courts
On the outskirts of Markelo, a village in the eastern Dutch region of Twente, Buitencentrum Hessenheem sits in a wooded area dotted with gardens and ponds. It’s pretty sweet spot for anyone after peaceful relaxation – just pitch your tent in the shade of the tall trees and embrace doing very little, except chilling by the pool (which has a paddling area, so you can keep an eye on the kids from the comfort of your lounger).
Equally, if you’re an active type, there’s still plenty to commend this family- and dog-friendly spot: on-site cycle hire means you can explore the surrounding countryside on two wheels (and with the option of electric bikes, even lazier folks can take part), perhaps going as far as Diepenheim (20 minutes by bike or 10 by car), with several castle estates and the Regge river.
Speaking of the Regge: kayaks, canoes and paddleboards can all be hired to investigate this placid waterway, or you can try a so-called whisper boat, with a quiet electric engine that won’t disrupt the peaceful vibe.
Paved and well-maintained paths ought to make most hikers happy as they amble through agricultural land, spotting sheep and listening out for cuckoo calls. Meanwhile, aspiring Federers can practise their backhand at the tennis court opposite the site. Forgot your trusted Dunlop? No worries: you can hire rackets and tennis balls from reception.
There’s a restaurant on site, or you can check out the dining options in Markelo (four minutes’ drive) or in De Whee and Goor (both 10 minutes).

Local attractions
A national park with heath-covered hills and forests, Sallandse Heuvelrug (20 minutes’ drive) is a popular destination for hikers, mountain-bikers and birdwatchers, who might catch glimpses of black grouse and birds of prey (plus deer and badgers). This is also a good spot for stargazing, with an observatory at the Outdoor Center Sallandse Heuvelrug.
With vertiginous roller coasters and a wild-water course, plus several attractions for younger children, including swan rides and carousels, AdventurePark Hellendoorn (half an hour) ought to keep the entire family entertained. On hot summer days, you might also want to check out the water slides at Aquaventura Slidepark, next door.
Visitors get to ride a genuine peat train at the outdoor Veenmuseum (half an hour), chugging past traditional huts, a vintage farmhouse and a taproom. A series of displays illustrates the conditions of the peat bog workers who toiled in this area until the 1950s.
