With a welcoming vibe, a good collection of activities on site and a lovely rural location in the Vechtdal, Vechtdalcamping het Tolhuis makes a clever pick for families looking for an action-packed break in splendid surroundings.
This Overijssel site is between Dalfsen and Ommen, with plenty of outings to things like adventure parks and castles within half an hour’s drive. You can also get straight out onto hiking and cycle trails around the Vechtdal region from the site, renting bikes on site if you need to.
When you’re not out exploring, spend time on site where kids can let off steam in the play areas, leap about on the bouncy castle or play football on the large sports field. There’s also an open-air pool where you can all cool off, and during high season there are lots of lively family sports and games organised by the on-site entertainment team.
So, there should be plenty to keep everybody entertained – but the good news doesn’t stop there. Spacious, partially shaded pitches have electric hook-ups and a water supply, and facilities are all modern and kept thoroughly clean. And once you’ve really caught the holiday mood (or you’re worn out by the day’s running around), you may well be thankful that the on-site restaurant provides a plentiful supply of kid-centric snacks as well as full meals.

Local attractions
Get your fix of fresh air on a walk/cycle along one of the woodland trails around Rechteren (10 minutes’ cycle/five minutes’ drive), centred around a medieval castle. There are also heathland strolls to be had in Lemelerberg nature reserve (half an hour’s cycle/10 minutes’ drive), or you could take on the woodland assault course and ziplines at Natuurlijk Heidepark (15 minutes’ drive), before having a swim in the natural pond.
Taking in some of the area’s history, culture and character might involve paying a visit to De Westermolen windmill (10 minutes) before heading to the art collections and outdoor sculpture park at Kasteel Het Nijenhuis (20 minutes). A tour of Zwolle (20 minutes), taking in the Grote Kerk, Sassenpoort gatehouse and the various canals is another good way to spend a day.
For a real kid-pleasing day out, head over to Avonturenpark Hellendoorn (25 minutes), which has a huge waterpark, shows and parades as well as a whole range of rides for all ages.
