- Scenic stays among greenery on the edge of Tsaobis Nature Park
- Less than three hours’ drive from Windhoek and coastal Swakopmund
- Swimming pool, driving trails, braai facilities and bar on site
Need to escape crowded city life for a while? Make tracks for Tsaobis Nature Park Restcamp, a family-friendly site in the western Namibian bush an hour’s drive from the nearest town of Karibib.
Midway between Windhoek and Swakopmund, this rest camp also makes a handy stopover on intercity journeys, for anyone who’s looking for… well, a rest. Even if you’re racing across the country, it’s worth allocating at least a little bit of time to a stay here (or preferably a lengthy bit of time): it’s far from busy streets and noisy offices, with nothing nearby other than stunning vistas, exceptional hikes and top-notch four wheel drive trails through challenging mountainous, sandy and muddy areas (excellent stress relief, obviously).
After energetic hours clambering around geological formations or hurling off-roaders down dry river beds, cool off back on site with a refreshing dip in the pool, grill something up on the braai (stock up on supplies before arrival, and store anything perishable in the site fridge), then toast the day’s activities with a few drinks in the rustic bar.
When the time comes to hit the road again, it’ll take roughly two and a half/three hours to drive on to Swakopmund or Windhoek, although those with more of an appetite for the outdoor life might prefer to detour to the Namib-Naukluft National Park, an hour and a half away.

Local attractions
Venturing up to this site is best done in a good sturdy vehicle… and that way you can get out onto the four-wheel drive trails that run through the surrounds, taking in stunning rock formations and landscapes enroute (including a most unusual marble ‘amphitheatre’).
If you don’t fancy tackling the thick sand and mud along the tracks, get your boots on instead for hikes on marked trails – the site has details of six routes, ranging from a couple of kilometres to a 15-kilometre one for the truly intrepid types.
For more of this natural gorgeousness, get in the car for the trip to the huge dunes of the Namib-Naukluft National Park (an hour and a half away) or the rocky peaks of Grosse Spitzkuppe Nature Reserve (two hours and 15 minutes). Or, if all the hiking and bumping around on trails has left you a little tender around the edges, perhaps it’s time for a spa treatment and a soak in the thermal waters at Gross Barmen hot springs (two hours and 15 minutes).
