- Family-friendly site at the entrance of Aït-Ben-Haddou ksar
- ‘Moroccan Hollywood’ Ouarzazate within half an hour’s drive
- Hot showers, restaurant and terrace with views of ksar and High Atlas
Stay calm, kids – but there’s a possibility you might bump into a celeb or two as you’re wandering in the area around Camping Panoramic Nofulla, a family-friendly spot at the entrance to the famed Aït-Ben-Haddou.
Even if the name doesn’t ring any bells, the scenery just might do – after all, the UNESCO-listed 11th-century ksar has had a starring role in many a blockbuster, including Game of Thrones, Gladiator, The Mummy and The Jewel of the Nile. And even if you don’t spot any film crews this time round, there’s plenty to see in the form of trad architecture, cobbled streets and shops to poke about in.
For more rural wanders, follow nearby hiking routes through the Drâa-Tafilalet region’s desert landscape or pedal off on a rented bike to explore with a little more ease. You might also fancy a trip to Ouarzazate (half an hour away) or clambering into a 4x4 to rumble off towards the High Atlas mountains, about two and a half hours away, for scenic vistas and a taste of Berber culture.
Whatever daily excursion you select, there are hot showers back at base to wash off the dust before settling in for local eats in the on-site restaurant (top tip: get there in good time so you can nab a spot on the outdoor terrace to tuck in while soaking up views of the ksar and its kasbahs).

Local attractions
No luck with spotting film stars locally? Have another go by taking yourself over to Ouarzazate (half an hour’s drive) – aka the Hollywood of Africa. Another crop of films have been shot at the studios over here, and you can take tours of various sets on studio tours.
For some classic Moroccan sights, take trips to Tamdaght Kasbah (five minutes) and Tazentoute (10 minutes), a small town with a palm grove. The kasbahs of Tifoultoute (25 minutes) and Telouet (an hour) are worth a stop too, as is Fint Oasis (50 minutes), where donkeys roam and local women still wash their clothes in the river (naturally, it’s also seen some film action in its time…)
A little further afield, springtime guests should certainly head to Roses Valley (two hours) to see the floral fields in full bloom. The craggy rock formations of the Dadès Gorge (two and a half hours) are stunning all year round, too.
