Good things come in petite packages in Luxembourg (perhaps not surprising given the country’s pint-sized proportions). And one of those good things is the Mullerthal, also known as Little Switzerland – a peaceful place that’s a haven for walkers, cyclists and generally outdoorsy types who hike through the hills and roam along the rivers. On the banks of one of those rivers, the Sûre, and in the village of Dillingen is where you’ll find family-friendly Camping Wies-Neu. From here it’s an easy ride to the walking and cycle paths that network the region, and it’s even easier to launch a canoe out on to the river, cast your rod out in search of fish or just plonk yourself onto an inflatable and float gently down the river. If you’ve brought your small fry along, there’s a playground to keep them busy, and an entertainment team who keep the place gently abuzz with a hum of activity, including crafts, volleyball matches and table tennis tournaments by day and bingo or karaoke after hours. There’s also a popular church service held on site every Sunday morning. Any immediate nibbling needs can be taken care of at the site’s snack bar, with the shop also on hand to provide all sorts of useful bits and bobs from breakfast bread rolls to beers to accompany your evening barbecue.

Liked De omgeving mooi groen en de fietspaden. Openbaar vervoer gratis. De oude trein , prachtig.

Disliked Geen bakker op fiets of loop afstand. Broodjes in de kleine kampwinkel erg aan de prijs.
Waardeloze wifi .
De douche op munten. Niet meer van deze tijd. Warm water, helaas. Lauw. En dat is vies afwassen.

From the manager: Hartelijk dank voor uw feedback, en fijn om te horen dat u genoten heeft van de groene omgeving, de fietspaden, de charme van het oude treintje en het gratis openbaar vervoer. Dat zijn echt typische pluspunten van Luxemburg!

Wat betreft de minder positieve punten:

Luxemburg is over het algemeen een stuk duurder dan veel buurlanden, iets waar veel gasten even aan moeten wennen. Ons kleine winkeltje doet zijn best om eerlijke prijzen aan te bieden, maar met een supermarkt kunnen we helaas niet concurreren. Een bakker op loop of fietsafstand is er helaas niet, we proberen onze gasten daar bij aankomst ook op te wijzen.

Het douchen met munten is inderdaad niet meer helemaal van deze tijd, maar helpt ons om water te besparen en eerlijk te verdelen. Het warme water in de afwasbakken is bewust niet te heet, om te voorkomen dat kinderen zich kunnen verbranden tijdens het spelen. Veiligheid gaat voor, ook al is lauw afwassen wat minder prettig.

En ja, het wifi-signaal op het platteland is niet altijd even sterk. We weten dat dit beter kan en blijven eraan werken binnen de mogelijkheden die we hier hebben.

Hopelijk heeft u toch van uw verblijf kunnen genieten, en wie weet tot een volgende keer!

Liked Nice setting by the river, plenty of walking/hiking trails from the pitch. Nice sized pitches.

Disliked Booked waterfront pitch but they were all tapped off, poor signage where the reception is which was only opened between 17-18. No toilet paper in WC's. Pay for shower (need a token from reception) which is fine but pitch up says 80c, on the shower €1, got charged €1.30.

Local attractions

Pottering, pedalling and paddling are all popular picks around these parts. Hardcore hikers might want to tackle the 112-kilometre Mullerthal Trail (or part of it), while cyclists in Little Switzerland have the choice of four mountain bike routes and a more placid selection of (mainly flat) national cycle routes to take them out through the wildflower meadows. For aquatic antics, there’s a canoe and kayak rental place five minutes’ walk from the site; a popular route is the 12-kilometre paddle along the Sûre river to Echternach. Meanwhile, treetop trails for adults and kids are at the Indian Forest in Vianden, 20 minutes' drive, and you can chill down afterwards with a swim in the pool over in Beaufort, five minutes from the site. Venture up to Vianden for the day (20 minutes away) to take the chairlift up to the castle and then stroll on down to the Victor Hugo House or the cartoon museum. Castle collectors should also pay a visit to the châteaux in Beaufort (10 minutes away) and Larochette (20 minutes).
