  • Scenic and well-equipped foodie site in the Umbrian hills
  • Hillside setting 10 minutes' drive from Monti Sibillini National Park
  • Pools, playgrounds, bowling and restaurant serving Umbrian cuisine
Come with an empty stomach if you’re staying at Camping Il Collaccio, a scenic and well-equipped foodie site in the Umbrian hills on the site of a former agricultural company and just to the west of Monti Sibillini National Park. The restaurant, Al Porcello Felice – which serves fresh Umbrian cuisine and specialities such as baked black trout, pink trout salad, salami, pancetta strozzapreti and tagliatelle with black truffle from its a la carte menu – is most definitely a highlight here. Once you’ve stopped salivating, you might like to know that chances to burn off all those extra calories are all around the site as it’s in a peaceful, green setting on the side of a hill about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Perugia. It has easy access to national park hikes and climbs as well as outdoor adventures such as trekking, paragliding, hang gliding, rafting and canyoning. With 100,000 square metres of greenery and views of the Valnerina region, big lunches can be balanced out by strolls across the site too, which is set around the stone house of Casale Grande (refurbished to contain the Camping Il Collaccio bar, shop, trattoria and reception). The grounds are home to shaded pitches and the site’s toilets, showers, washing-up area and disabled facilities as well. If you need a seriously intense workout after all the gorging, leisure facilities include two pools (with plenty of space for sunbathing alongside); a grass and mini-volleyball field; a five-a-side football field; a tennis court; a bowling green and two ping pong tables. All facilities and amenities are included in the pitch price… so you’ll have more cash to splash on those Umbrian meals.

Powered forest floor campsite (large)

Liked: This campsite was a delight to stay at. Staff very accommodating and friendly. Location has great scenery of the mountains. We had an evening meal good value for money. All facilities was well kept and clean. Camping area was under woodland and shady, and was nice to wake up to a coo coo and birds singing. Very peaceful. Just a note the road to the campsite is very steep and windy, and a beast of a car is needed if towing a caravan. But when you arrive you will see it’s worth it. Easier to leave as the exit is down hill through the campsite. Would definitely stay again.

Liked: Fabulous site, clean, and very well laid out. The staff were very helpful.
Fresh bread every day is so yummy.
I didn't use the restaurant or bar but both look very inviting.

Disliked: Roads, approaching and exiting are very narrow, steep, and sharp hairpin bends.
I managed with a 6.5 meter campervan, not sure how caravaners managed.

Powered forest floor campsite (medium)

Liked: What a stunning location!! Big hilltop campsite with great facilities, including infinity pool and bar/restaurant. We didn't eat there but the drinks were reasonably priced considering the fairly remote location. Big place but didn't feel too crowded or noisy, although we were out during the daytime when the pool area was busy.

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Visso, the administrative centre of Monti Sibillini National Park, is 15 minutes’ drive from the site if you’re going to be trotting off on treks around the area. Up for exploring towns too? Spilling down a hillside, Trevi’s a 50-minute drive away with its medieval and Romanesque churches, small museums and locally made olive oil for sale. Another town, Spello (55 minutes), is well worth visiting for its medieval walls and marble buildings. It’s set on Monte Subasio, Saint Francis’ mountain – head to Assisi next (an hour and 10 minutes’ drive) to find out more about Italy’s patron saint and to visit the fresco-filled church dedicated to him. For history by the bucketload, Rome’s two hours and 25 minutes away from the site.
