- Adults-only accommodation in wooded hills 35 minutes’ drive from Siena
- Basso Merse Nature Reserve 20 minutes’ drive; Montalcino 35 minutes
- Dogs welcome; covered terrace with spectacular forest views
Sitting within a vast expanse of gentle forested hills, seemingly in the middle of nowhere (but easily accessed via the SP33 road), is Casa Martina. This excellent spot for an adults-only break has two separate one-bedroom apartments; guests also share a garden with a barbecue area, a covered terrace and outdoor seating, not to mention unforgettable views of Tuscany’s Merse valley.
You might not want to travel very far from this heavenly corner of the world – though those wooded landscapes sure look inviting to anyone with a passion for hiking (or mountain biking). And chances are your dog (who’s welcome to stay here) will need exercising, so… You might head to the Basso Merse Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive), established to protect the river Merse’s wildlife, which includes otters and salamanders, plus kingfishers and birds of prey.
From there, you might want to drive a little farther south to reach the Terme Libere di Petriolo, a rugged area of open-air hot springs and shallow pools where the water temperature exceeds 40° centigrades – blissfully soothing, especially after a sweaty hike.
The accommodation at Casa Martina is self-catering, and the villages of Casciano and Vescovado (both five minutes, in opposite directions along the SP33) are your best bets to source the essentials for your meals – and to dine out if you don’t fancy cooking.

Local attractions
The splendid Piazza del Campo in Siena (35 minutes’ drive) is the setting for a summer horse race known as ‘Il Palio’, in which the city’s various districts compete against each other. Grab an outdoor table, and sip a drink while gazing at the Palazzo Pubblico, or head to the Cathedral, with its ornate facade and distinctively striped belltower.
In Montalcino (35 minutes), the Tempio del Brunello - Interactive Museum takes you on an immersive journey exploring the soil, the grapes and the people that have made the local wine – Brunello di Montalcino – such a prestigious product. Then head out into the surrounding countryside to visit vineyards and wineries.
On the outskirts of Poggibonsi (45 minutes), the Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale is a military fort built by order of Lorenzo de’ Medici in the 1480s and never fully completed. On the same hill is Poggibonsi Archaeodrome - Open Air Museum, with reconstructed huts and other structures from the ninth century
