  • Quiet rural site five minutes’ walk from the medieval village of Tatti
  • Half an hour’s drive from the coast; Abbey of San Galgano 35 minutes
  • Views of the hills, sea and surrounding islands; communal picnic area
Tatti, a hilltop medieval village in Tuscany, is where you’ll arrive for a stay at Ixtlan Agricamping. Park up in one of the village’s free car parks, where staff will whisk you (and your luggage) from the village to their tiny, rural site just 400 metres away. Shaded by trees most of the time, especially in the morning hours, it's an oh-so scenic setting with views of the hills, the sea and the surrounding islands (including Elba and Giglio). A communal picnic bench, shared bathrooms and a washing-up area are set up around the site, making stays feel nice and straightforward. Every morning, the Ixtlan Agricamping team take care to meet their guests and dish out personalised recommendations on where to go and what to do in this gorgeous part of Italy, including local restaurants (speaking of, nearby Tatti has one scenic restaurant with a terrace overlooking the Tuscany slopes). There are many medieval villages in the area, including Rocca di Derighi, 15 minutes' drive away, and Montemassi, 20 minutes away. If you’re down for a slightly longer day trip, Siena is an hour and 20 minutes’ drive away; located halfway along the route is the 13th-century Abbey of San Galgano, with its roofless stone walls. For beach days and seafood restaurants selling the likes of clam pasta, it’s a half-hour drive to Follonica. Smaller coves like Cala Violina, backed by pine trees and accessible on foot, are within 40 minutes' drive of the site. For snacks and supplies, grocery shops are within a 15-minute drive of Ixtlan Agricamping. Some local products are sold directly on site, too, so getting your hands on some yummy souvenirs should be nice and easy.

Local attractions

There’s so much to do in Tuscany, but Medieval Montemassi (20 minutes’ drive) should make a good starting point, set 140 metres above sea level. Once fortified, it has an old castle and just one single gate still standing. Massa Marittima (half an hour), a little higher up at 380 metres and home to a better-preserved medieval wall, is also worth a stop, even if it's just for the drive there (along scenic winding roads). If you ever find yourself fancying a dip of some kind, there are three main options from Ixtlan Agricamping: thermal baths (the closest in Petriolo and Sasso Pisano, both 50 minutes away), the gorgeous Lago dell‘Accesa (20 minutes) or beaches across the town of Castiglione della Pescaia (45 minutes) and the more remote Sterpaia (40 minutes). A little further away, but equally as tempting, are the beaches and hiking trails of Parco Regionale della Maremma (an hour and 10 minutes) and the medieval town of Capalbio (an hour and 20 minutes).
