Views of abundant citrus groves make a gorgeous backdrop to an outdoor stay in Sicily… but when the unmistakable outline of Mount Etna also appears on the horizon – well, that’s something special. And the special location in question is Il Pampaleone Glamping and Resort, on the island’s eastern coast about 15 minutes’ drive from Acireale.
‘On the coast’ here means exactly that – there’s direct access to a pebble beach from the site, and sea views from several parts of the property. One of those parts is the swimming pool area, which has a main seawater pool, a kids’ pool, a kiosk for cool drinks and sun loungers where you can sunbathe in comfort.
With Etna being such a big presence at this site, you’re bound to want to get out to see it more closely – and you’ll be in prime position to do so, being about 20 minutes’ drive from the edge of the Parco dell’Etna and with numerous guided tours around to join if you like. You’ll also easily be able to take day trips to Catania or Taormina (both within an hour’s drive) or just chill out on beaches like Fondachello (around 20 minutes away).
There are lots of great places to eat in the nearby towns and rural areas, but you don’t have to travel far for a good meal if you don't want to, as the site has its own café and pizzeria for guests only.

Local attractions
The nearby town of Acireale (15 minutes’ drive) is a nice place to wander around, with a gorgeous cathedral, some ornate churches and a couple of good museums. A little further south, Catania (half an hour) is the island’s second-largest city and therefore packed with things to do and places to eat. The Roman amphitheatre, Ursino Castle and Palazzo Biscari are among the top picks.
There’s more wonderful heritage to see in Taormina (45 minutes), home to another fabulous amphitheatre and sights like the Villa Comunale and the white marble Chiesa di San Giuseppe. The town has a lively beach too, or you can climb Monte Tauro for sweeping coastal views.
Zafferana Etnea (20 minutes) is your gateway to Parco dell’Etna, with all sorts of tours on offer including sunset hikes, wine tasting outings and jeep trips. You can visit the park on your own too, but a guide is mandatory if you want to get to the volcano’s summit. Gole dell’Alcantara Gorge (35 minutes) is another good option for scenery-seekers.
