The Salento area of Puglia (think of it as the spur of Italy’s boot) is renowned for its beaches and crystal-clear waters. Both are within easy reach at peaceful Area Camper I Faraglioni, about 80 metres from the Adriatic Sea, in the old fishing village of Torre Sant’Andrea.
The site is about a half-hour drive from Lecce and one hour from Brindisi. There’s no need to worry about how you’re going to get there without your own transport, since there is a handy shuttle service from (and to) both Brindisi and Bari airports, and from Lecce and Otranto train stations.
Those blue waters sure are inviting, but before you start looking for somewhere to unfurl your towel and kick off your flip flops, spend a minute or ten familiarising yourself with the facilities on site. Chances are the kids will have already found the play area and the games room; wellness treatments and relaxing massages are available for stressed-out grown-ups.
Family time can be spent on a hired bike exploring the rugged coastline, which is punctuated by dramatic sea stacks – the nearest ones, the Faraglioni di Sant’Andrea, are a five-minute walk away. The lower cliffs here are popular with the locals who come to dive, snorkel and swim; if you prefer a sandy beach, there’s a small cove to the south, opposite a smaller sea stack known as the Sphinx for its distinctive profile.
Fresh bread and pastries are supplied every morning, so that’s breakfast sorted. For other meals, there are a couple of restaurants in the village, and more choices (plus grocery stores) in Torre dell’Orso (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
The Cave of Poetry (five minutes’ drive) is a spectacular natural swimming pool carved out of the limestone cliffs by the waves. Get there early in the summer to grab a good spot from where to admire local daredevils as they dive into the emerald waters.
A pretty marina and a sheltered sandy beach with shallow waters are just two of many attractions in Otranto (15 minutes). Check out the Aragonese Castle, dating from the 15th century, and the cathedral, with its stunning floor mosaics. (Don’t forget to look up in the cathedral: the ceiling is pretty stunning, too.)
Lecce is known for its Baroque architecture, splendid examples of which include the Basilica di Santa Croce, featuring an elaborately adorned façade, and the cathedral, with its tapered bell tower. There’s a playground in the leafy Giardini Pubblici Giuseppe Garibaldi park, which spreads around a stone folly.
