  • Dog-friendly mountain environment at the base of Monte Rosa
  • Within walking distance of cable cars, gold mines, hikes and a lake
  • Children’s play area overlooking the river
At the foot of Monte Rosa, mountain scenery is a given at Natural Camping Macugnaga. Splendid times spent climbing, hiking, skiing, canyoning or just plain-old exploring may also be in your itinerary here. After all, this family-friendly site is in the Anzasca Valley, one of the seven spectacular Ossola Valleys, with cable cars to ski resorts, mountain glaciers and high-up hikes within walking distance. When you’re not heading towards the clouds, enjoy the scenery from the grounds of the site on the east face of the mountain. Crisp mountain air, relaxation and excellent views are some of the top things about this site. The children’s play area overlooks the Anza river, which comes directly from the Monte Rosa glacier (4634 metres above sea level). Helpful facilities around the site include bathrooms with showers and a laundry area. The owners love the mountains and call this place a great solution for families seeking outdoor sports, relaxation and a little peace too. The centre of the mountain village, Macugnaga, is just 15 minutes’ walk from the site and has shops and restaurants. Called the Old Dorf, the centre has elements from the Walser tradition that may be of interest. Otherwise, walk down to the cable cars that will take you up into the mountains (there’s one 15 minutes’ walk away, and another 45 minutes’ walk away) or head for a peaceful walk around Lago delle Fate (half an hour’s walk), a lake with local legends and surrounding woodlands.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: From the moment we arrived, we got treated like old friends. The welcome and offer of help was a 10/10 from us. The scenery was just breath taking, and to wake up new years eve with a good layer of snow just ticked the final box for why we went. The toilet and shower room facilities were spotless. The facilities for water and waste are modern, well maintained and kept spotlessly clean. We were the only British on the site, but you wouldn't think it, as the hosts, and other guests went beyond expected to speak with us, invite us into their activities, and generally offer any help and advise about the area they thought we would like. Would we go again?. Yes, we will certainly never forget this place.

Disliked: I genuinly can not think of a single negative point to put forward as an improvement idea for the site owner.

Take the cable car to Monte Moro from Macugnaga (around 15 minutes’ walk) for a hike that goes past a reservoir and ends at an alpine pass. The chair lift to the Belvedere (45 minutes’ walk or 10 minutes’ drive) will take you to a gorgeous glacier on the east side of Monte Rosa too. Keen skiers will find resorts around Stazione Belvedere (10 minutes’ drive) and Macugnaga Monterosa Ski Resort (under 10 minutes’ drive). Rifugio Zamboni Zappa (45 minutes’ walk or 10 minutes’ drive) runs mountaineering excursions too. You might prefer to take the 20 minutes’ walk to what was once a gold mine with a mercury mill. Tours now run around the Miniera d'Oro della Guia.
