General
- Lake-view site on the shores of Lake Maggiore
- A 10-minute drive from Verbania; half an hour from Isola Bella
- Private beach, sailing school and restaurant with scenic terrace
It’s majorly scenic, is Lake Maggiore – so if you’re heading this way it stands to reason that you’ll want to seek out a spot where you can survey the vistas at your leisure.
Step forward, Camping La Sierra, a family-friendly place right by the water on the Piedmont side of the lake, a couple of minutes’ drive north of the little town of Ghiffa. Splendid views can be had from most corners of this site, perhaps most notably the restaurant, where you can dine out on the terrace with a rather dreamy backdrop of lake and mountain (and while that outlook might be a tad distracting, the food’s pretty good too – with a real focus on fresh local dishes).
But why limit yourself to just looking, eh? The site’s got its own private beach area if you feel the need to get in for a swim or a paddle, along with a sailing school where you can take lessons or rent pedaloes to go for a more extensive explore. If you’re unsure about your marine navigation skills, there are plenty of footpaths to roam along locally and boat trips to be had from Verbania, 10 minutes’ drive away.
That said, the lake-gazing on site is indeed very fine – and the folk here have cleverly designed their place with terraces to provide views for all and ensure no jostling for the best spots. There’s also a small playground for bambini less enthused by staring at the surrounds.

Get set for a bit of garden envy – the 16 hectares at Villa Taranto (10 minutes’ drive) are stunning, packed with trees from around the globe, all manner of colourful blooms, sculptures and fountains, all with that splendid lake-and-mountain background. Its town of Verbania is a pretty place all round, in fact, with Renaissance and Romanesque churches to wander around and plenty of waterside cafés.
Board a boat from Verbania to cross easily to the opposite side of the lake for a ride up the cable car from Laveno-Mombello for some fab views over the whole lake. Boats also leave Verbania for the gorgeous Baroque palace and gardens on Isola Bella (or drive down there in half an hour).
If you like to get active on hols, there are plenty of places to get out for a hike or bike ride around the lake or up in the mountains – the Uriezzo Gorges and Monte Fenera Natural Park are both about an hour’s drive away for proper hill scrambles. For an adrenaline rush closer to base, try the high ropes at AquadventurePark (25 minutes) or Lake Maggiore Zipline (40 minutes).
