  • Quiet Piedmont site on the southeast shores of Lake Orta
  • A five-minute drive from Orta San Giulio’s medieval old town
  • Views of San Giulio Island; a couple of minutes’ walk from a beach
It’s no wonder that so many people want to go to Lake Orta in northern Italy, tempted by flicking through pictures of its blue water surrounded by lush green slopes and adorable little beaches. Camping Bellavista takes up a prime position on the lake’s southeast shore, overlooking San Giulio Island. The quiet, green setting is only a 10-minute drive away from Orta San Giulio's medieval old town and ferries to the historic island. Spacious and well equipped, the scenic site has modern toilets, hot showers and a play area where kids can let off steam. The reception has a helpful information point, should you want to browse your options for excursions, although one of the key things to note is that the nearest beach – a small, pebbled destination with spectacular views – is just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the site. There is a bakery selling fresh bread and a variety of other products on the edge of Orta San Giulio, five minutes’ drive away. If you need further supplies, head out to the shops and restaurants in the old town, which are a 10-minute drive away. From the old town, there are ferry connections to San Giulio Island, where you can tour the historic Basilica di San Giulio. While Lake Orta is clearly the main attraction at Camping Bellavista, this is also a very nifty spot for getting out to famed Lake Maggiore, which is within a 25-minute drive, or the 1,492-metre-high Western Alps mountain Mottarone, which is within half an hour’s drive.

From the manager: We are truly sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations, especially regarding the parking.
Unfortunately, during the high season, it is not always easy to satisfy everyone, but we always do our best to find suitable solutions.

However, we would like to point out that courtesy and care for our guests are very important to us.
It surprises us to hear that we were perceived as impolite, as this does not reflect our way of working nor the feedback we usually receive.

We genuinely care about the well-being of our guests, and we are sorry that this was not your impression.
We hope there will be another opportunity in the future to offer you a more positive experience.

Power optional grass campsite (premium)

Liked Toilet block good, long hose for water, that's about it.

Disliked 19yr old "youth" in reception which was a small, semi-derelect, 50yr old caravan with his motorbike outside. He had NO computer, did NOT know we were booked in and the site was full a few hours later, good job we got there early, I expect the 4e tourist tax went in his pocket. The hedges needed trimming, there's NOT enough electric sockets, brick layers were re building a wall 3ft Behind our van, campsite roads POOR condition, some very STEEP, only ONE water tap, NO shop, NO village (bring plenty of food), NO direct access to beach (150yds up the road and down a lane to a TINY PUBLIC BEACH).NO WiFi I think! NO SECURITY, the binmen drove in at 5 AM ! NICE. NO bar. NO NOTHING. Everything was so 1970's and yes I have been there. NOT UP TO MODERN STANDERD, NOT GOOD ENOUGH, TOO EXPENSIVE. ONE STAR CAMPSITE. ADVOID, IF POSSIBLE.

From the manager: Accettiamo volentieri le critiche, anche negative, purché siano giuste e veritiere.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

From the manager: We gladly accept criticism, even when it’s negative — as long as it’s fair and truthful. We’re sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations, but we would like to clarify a few points.

Our campsite is located in the heart of nature, something clearly visible on the map that most of our guests consult before booking. We are not near shopping malls because we are in a historic center, Orta San Giulio, known for its authenticity, tranquility, and beauty — not for nightlife or retail activity.

Supermarkets, however, are just five minutes from the campsite and easy to reach.

As for the tourist tax, it is a municipal requirement, which is why we collect it in cash, as clearly communicated. A receipt is always issued at the time of payment, as required by local regulations.

Regarding the showers and water access, we invite anyone to come and see for themselves: there are two outdoor showers and a water fountain in front of the bathrooms. So we are unsure how it was concluded that “there is only one tap.”

We are a new campsite, open for just three months, and we are happy to welcome guests even under a beach umbrella if needed — without any problem. Our goal is to grow year after year and continue improving what we offer. But we strongly believe that most of our guests choose us for the peace, simplicity, and connection to nature.

We also want to clarify that we are not building any walls. We do not have permission for such work, and no such construction is happening. The internal roads of the campsite are easily accessible with any type of vehicle and are not steep, contrary to what was mentioned.

Lastly, I personally work every day — with the support of my family and four small children — to make sure all of our guests feel welcome and comfortable. For us, cleanliness, order, and relaxation are absolute priorities.

If someone is looking for bars, shops, or nightlife, we kindly recommend considering a different destination. Orta San Giulio is a peaceful, historic location, best suited for those seeking nature, silence, and authenticity.

We still wish you all the best and hope you find a place more suited to your preferences in the future.

Local attractions

Perhaps the most logical place to begin your adventures is Lake Orta itself, where there are several historic sites with spectacular views down over the lake. One of the closest spots is Torre di Buccione (35 minutes’ walk), an old tower with stunning views of the water and surrounding mountains. Up in Orta San Giulio is Sacro Monte di Orta (five minutes' drive), a Roman Catholic complex with 20 chapels dedicated to the life of St Francis of Assisi. Built in 1590, this destination is part of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santuario della Madonna del Sasso (25 minutes) should also be worth the short drive. Raised 638 metres above the lake, it has views of the Alps, including the Mottarone mountain (25 minutes). If you have any time left over, a 25-minute drive will get you to Lake Maggiore, Italy’s second-largest lake. You could take a boat out to the scenic Borromean Islands (35 minutes to ferry ports) or drive around the shores to take in the views, stopping at any restaurants that take your fancy.
