  • Wooden shelter with a retractable roof in the winemaking Langhe area
  • Cortemilia 15 minutes’ drive; Piana Crixia Regional Park 40 minutes
  • Excellent stargazing and spectacular views; cycle hire; dogs welcome
Up on a forested hill in the Langhe area of Piedmont, La Duchessa is a wooden shelter with a difference: the roof opens up completely, giving guests unobstructed views of the sky while they’re cosily ensconced in bed. The only danger here is that you might never fall asleep, as you'll be too busy counting stars and spotting constellations moving across the dark skies… And the views from the front of the cabin are just as spectacular, taking in the valley of the river Bormida, vineyard-covered hills and (since La Duchessa sits on a west-facing slope) spectacular sunsets. At times, this full-immersion-in-nature experience might make you wonder if you’re the only people in the vicinity, but don’t worry: civilisation is not far. The village of Levice can be reached with a five-minute drive and it has a trattoria and a bar; if you need the shops, you might need to head to Cortemilia (15 minutes’ drive), which also has a few eateries and a surprising number of wine bars – but then you are in one of Italy’s most renowned wine-producing regions here… La Duchessa welcomes your canine companion, too, and there are electric bikes for hire, so you can explore the hilly landscape on two wheels. Pedal to Bergolo (15 minutes by bike, or five by car), where there’s a restaurant with a swimming pool; or to Prunetto (25 minutes by bike, or 10 by car), with its medieval castle.

Local attractions

The Strada Romantica delle Langhe e del Roero (35 minutes) runs between Camerana (25 minutes’ drive) and Vezza d’Alba (an hour), a village renowned for its truffles. There are 11 suggested stops en route, including Mombarcaro, from where you might be able to catch a glimpse of the Ligurian Sea, and the woodlands around Benevello. Starting from the village of Sale San Giovanni, the Percorso Lavanda (35 minutes) comprises four trails that snake their way among colourful lavender fields (at least during the early summer months), plus sunflowers and medicinal plants. Along the route you might also come across centuries-old frescoed chapels. One of the highlights of the Piana Crixia Regional Park (40 minutes) is the Fungo Gigante, a huge mushroom-shaped formation with a granite boulder sitting atop a column of sedimentary rock and pebbles. Keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey flying overhead and badgers and foxes scuttling around in the undergrowth.
