Deep in the heart of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello nature reserve, Carpegna Park - Family Adventure Mountain (15 minutes’ drive) has activities for all ages and levels of ability, including 12 treetop trails, guided e-bike tours and a fairy woodland for younger visitors.
Pack an extra cardigan when you visit the Onferno Grotte caves (40 minutes), where temperatures are close to 13°C. The caverns are home to one of the largest bat colonies in central Italy, and guided visits take you along narrow passages to a bat nursery, where you might see mothers and babies hanging upside down.
The Renaissance town of Urbino (one hour) is famed for being the birthplace of the artist Raphael, whose childhood home is now a museum, and for the exquisite Palazzo Ducale, with its slim turrets and elegant interiors, like Duke Federico’s study, lined with wooden inlays. The palace also houses an art gallery, with works by Raphael and Piero della Francesca.
