Iron Gate Marina 3B: The harbour

General

  • On the banks of the Magra river, 10 minutes' drive from Sarzana
  • Less than an hour's drive from Portovenere and Cinque Terre
  • Harbour, restaurant and pool; direct river access; beach shuttle bus

The peaks of the Apuan Alps on one side, the Magra river on the other and a stretch of sandy beach a short drive away – Iron Gate Marina 3B certainly has a cast-iron claim to a splendid setting.

The La Spezia surrounds may well be pretty special, but so is the park – it stretches out to a full nine hectares, much of it packed with pine trees and poplars, with direct access to the river (and the Mediterranean waters that lie beyond) from its own harbour area. Not in possession of your own boat? No need to be left on the land – you can hire small boats on site for aquatic adventures.

If you'd rather cling a little closer to the coast it’s a 10-minute drive to the nearest beach, although you'll not have to navigate the journey for yourself as a free shuttle bus trundles between the site and the sands through the summer. Sticking steadfastly to dry land? Slope off to Sarzana with a 10-minute drive to hit the shops or mosey through the medieval streets.

Should you not fancy either outing, you'll not miss out on swims and eats – there’s an outdoor pool and kids' pool on site, along with a mini market and bar/restaurant for easy eats and drinks (and a cash machine to help pay for them). Togs looking a tad tired? Take them to get cleaned up at the launderette or splash out on some new ones at the site's clothing shop.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 01/05 and 15/09.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The restaurant is open between 01/05 and 30/09.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Reception is unmanned after 8 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

The site was not busy but clearly catered for quite a resident population, so we had the place largely to ourselves.
We had a reasonably sized pitch and the cafe bar was still open.
We enjoyed being by the river.

    Disliked:

    No toilet paper in WCs.

People using motorhome service point to empty and clean toilet cassette when there was a very well maintained chemical waste point.

Noisy, hot camp site with no shade for tents and too hard ground.08/01/2021

    Disliked:

There was music and karaoke until 1:30am and people talking loudly until 3am. In a country where the sun cooks you out of your tent before 7am that is a ridiculous amount of noise. The camping was noisy, hot, no shade at the tent area (where it’s most needed) and the ground was poorly cared for (extremely hard, no grass). WiFi didn’t work at all. When I pay 39€ each night, I expect a whole lot more. I’ve had hotels in Italy for the same price with much better facilities.

Restaurant and shop. Central location for seeing the region. Clean facilities. No toilet paper or soap but otherwise very nice.

    Disliked:

No shade (the trees had been severely pruned). Not advised in advance that we had to have bath caps in the pool and reserve a time slot for it one day in advance ( this is useless for travellers going through and very difficult for people who need flexibility), or that the river is not suitable for swimming or paddle boards. Very dusty hot pitch. Noise from autostrada at times annoying.

Local attractions

It’s best to leave both your boat and your car behind for the day if you're planning an outing to the famed Cinque Terre National Park – boats and trains run from La Spezia (half an hour’s drive) to the park, giving you access to the colourful cliffside villages and walking trails without tackling tricky mountain roads. Pretty Portovenere is a good alternative for a day out, but you’ll need your car for this one – it's a 50-minute drive.

More walks and outdoorsy activities? Make for the Montemarcello Natural Park, 15 minutes away, for woodland and coastal trails, plus walks around Lerici Castle, Punta Corva black-sand beach and the abandoned village of Barbazzano (all 20 minutes). For more challenging hikes and mountain bike days, the Apuan Alps are about half an hour away by car.

Even if you're not planning to scale any mountains, it's worth heading that way anyway to see the stunning marble caves of Carrara (35 minutes). Swing past Sarzana (10 minutes) on the way back to see some of that marble put to good use in the cathedral, before taking a wander around the ancient walls and fortress.
