  • Camping village with beach access 15 minutes’ drive from Anzio
  • Rome 50 minutes by bus; half an hour’s drive to Cinecittà World
  • Swimming complex and sports courts; restaurants, bar and entertainment
Set among 420 acres of pine forest, holm oak and Mediterranean scrub and bordering sand dunes, Camping Village Parco della Gallinara is a clever choice for families looking for a sporty beach holiday combined with sightseeing in Rome (50 minutes by bus). Daily life at the camping village revolves around the Lagoon Pool complex – take a dip and catch some sun before rejuvenating with a glass of something chilled at the terrace bar, keeping an eye on the kids as they play in the pool. Rather head for the waves? There’s direct access from the pitches to the pristine beach at Lido dei Pini, with golden sand and calm seas. Want to keep active? Maintain your fitness regime on the jogging and biking trails, or head for the sports fields to play tennis, padel and volleyball. Need motivation to get moving? The on-site teams organise daytime sports programmes (windsurfing or sailing anyone?), as well as a mini-club for kids with workshops and outdoor activities. No need to worry about catering either, as you’re covered from breakfast to supper. Tuck into hand-made pizza, seafood dishes and ice creams in the main restaurant, or grab snacks and sharing plates from the beach kiosk during the day. Dine in style at Lido 18 Grill Bar, with nightly entertainment, films and live music. Takeaways are available too, and there’s a well-stocked supermarket on site if you’d rather fend for yourselves food-wise.

Local attractions

You’ll need to be organised to see something of Rome (50 minutes on the Co.Tra.L. bus line, which stops outside the camping village) in a day; check out the Colosseum, Forum and the Pantheon (they’re within walking distance of each other), grab a pasta lunch in lively Piazza Navona and then cover up (no bare shoulders or shorts) to tour St Peter’s Basilica and the extraordinary museums at the Vatican City. After all that culture, treat well-behaved kids to slides at the water park and sea lion shows at Zoomarine (20 minutes), or head for the rollercoasters and planetarium at Rainbow MagicLand (an hour and 10 minutes). Visit Cinecittà World (half an hour) for adrenaline-inducing thrill rides, time travel in Spaceland and movie-themed fun. For more restful pursuits, get out hiking among the sulphur springs, soaring cliffs and carefully preserved Mediterranean scrubland in the coastal Riserva Naturale Regionale Tor Caldara (10 minutes), or take the hydrofoil from Anzio port (20 minutes) for a day exploring the rocky coastline of Ponza in the Pontine Islands.
