A private beach – the stuff dreams are made of, right? Or indeed the stuff reality is made of, if you’re a guest of Villaggio Camping Sambalon, right on the seafront at Zambrone on the Calabrian coast.
This is a stunner of a beach too, all white sand and clear waters, with surf that’s shallow and calm enough for all ages to splash about in safely. There are plenty of loungers and umbrellas to go round, and you may well even be able to use them in peace (for a while, anyway) thanks to the enthusiastic team that runs activities to keep the kids amused while you relax.
If you’d like to spend a little longer away from the lounger, a range of day trips run from the site in high season to take you to interesting spots (boat trips to the Aeolian islands maybe, or cultural wanderings in Reggio Calabria, or walks in the Sila National Park). There’s also a train station a 10-minute walk away if you’d prefer to roam at your own pace.
You’d be well advised to leave a little energy for later on though – for an aperitif at the beach bar, then dinner in the restaurant, or by picking up a pizza fresh from the woodfired oven, or by cooking up your own feast with eats acquired from the well-stocked mini market.
Suitably fed and watered, it’s time to party under the stars – perhaps settling in for a live show at the open-air theatre or shimmying away on the dancefloor. And if it all sounds rather too exhausting, keep in mind that private beach, within easy staggering distance for any morning-after sunbathing...

Route directions
If you arrive from the north with a motorhome or touring caravan it's best to follow the signs to Vibo Valentia-Pizzo train station and then follow the signs to Tropea. This avoids the need to go through Pizzo, which can be tricky with a large vehicle.

Local attractions
More smashing beaches are just along the coast: a 20-minute walk north takes you to Marinella, a little cove known to locals as ‘il paradiso del sub’ for its underwater attractions. Snorkel out from the rocks, or book a diving trip from the centre 10 minutes’ walk from the site for underwater exploring.
15 minutes’ drive from the site is Tropea, home to another beach as well as a harbour where you can hire boats or join trips out to the islands. A particularly popular route takes you to the island of Stromboli, one of Italy’s three active volcanoes.
Tropea’s got a lovely little Old Town to wander through, and a fab hilltop church that’s worth the hike up to look out over some spectacular sea views. There’s also a seafront castle in Pizzo, 25 minutes away.
