  • Scenic site with shade from eucalyptus trees and beach access
  • Under 20 minutes’ walk to shops and amenities of Castrocucco
  • Pizzeria, bar, mini market, play area, tennis and beach volleyball
Could touring around Italy’s terrific Tyrrhenian coast be easier than at Villaggio Camping Maratea? Set your sights on a stint at this park set in the commune of Castrocucco, with access to the Mediterranean's scenic shores right outside its front gate, to see for yourself (or just have a glimpse at the pics). When not roaming the surroundings or seeking shade under eucalyptus trees in the grounds guests can sort food at the restaurant, bar, pizzeria or mini market. A play area is on hand to keep kids busy while waiting for meals to arrive – or prepping your own – and sporty adults will have their own active amusement to choose from in the shape of tennis, table tennis and beach volleyball. In the meantime, adventurous types can set off on guided tours across the lush local landscapes… And if you're one for unwinding with a post-excursion spritz from the bar? Ask at the park about the regular entertainment; with trips to mountains, caves and islands on the cards a rest later on will surely be well deserved. But where to amble along on adventures? For energetic times with the kids, the flumes and waves of Aquafans waterpark are a 15-minute drive away, while Dino Island is reachable by boat from San Nicola Arcella (also 15 minutes). If you're keen on caves, keep an eye out for tours that will take you past the Grotta dell'Arco Magno en route. Back on land, beaches are plentiful on the Tyrrhenian Coast and one of the biggest in the area – Praia a Mare – is 10 minutes from Villaggio Camping Maratea. Deckchairs and sun loungers are laid out here for lazing with a drink from the kiosk bar, and pedaloes are available for hire.

Local attractions

Inland from Villaggio Camping Maratea, Pollino National Park’s canyons, peaks and pine forests are a 45-minute drive away while the mountains of Aieta are a little closer at under 25 minutes. Staying away from the seaside, the hilltop town of Papasidero with its third- and sixth-century church frescoes and wooden statues is also 45 minutes from the site, and you can peruse Palaeolithic cave paintings in the Romito grotto, an hour’s drive away, too. Coastal culture can be had in the seaside town of Cirella, 30 minutes away, which has a Roman mausoleum along with an ancient clifftop village that had the misfortune of being sacked not once, not twice but three times. If wanders around villages are right up your street, the medieval Trecchina, Rivello, Lagonegro, Tortora and Ajeta are all under a half an hour’s drive from the site as well.
