  • Peaceful site in the countryside 800 metres from a swimming beach
  • Gerovassiliou Estate 10 minutes’ drive; Epanomi Wetlands 25 minutes
  • Bike hire and music bar on site; 40 minutes’ drive from Thessaloniki
On the eastern shore of the Thermaic Gulf, 40 minutes’ drive from Thessaloniki, Art Camping is an excellent option for those after a sand and sea holiday (plus wild swimming, plus snorkelling, plus diving…), with a side of local gastronomic offerings. This peaceful site sits among agricultural fields just 800 metres from a pretty swimming beach where there are free beach umbrellas and spectacular views (including of Mount Olympus across the water). On site is the Erineli Museum, with photographs and cameras (photographic and cinematographic), from the era of tripod cameras in dark rooms to today. The site also has a large garden dotted with shade-giving olive and walnut trees and in-garden toilet and shower facilities. There are picnic tables and hammocks for afternoon snoozing (or nighttime stargazing), plus a covered terrace with a music bar for sociable evenings. On days when the local beach doesn’t appeal, you can hire a bike from the site and explore the rest of the coastline, going up to Nea Michaniona and the Riviera Virgin Beach (20 minutes’ bike ride), or inland, to the ruins of the Dependency of Kritzianon (half an hour). As well as a communal fridge freezer, the site has a kitchen, a barbecue station and a woodburning oven. However, with a coffee bar and food available to buy on site, you might not fancy tending to the coals and fire all the time (less washing-up involved that way, too…). To add to that, there are several tavernas within half an hour’s walk of the site where you can gorge on Greek salads, freshly caught seafood and gyros.

Power optional grass and earth tent campsite

Liked I had a great time at art camping. Jannis and his father, the hosts who live on site, are really kind and very helpful. I appreciated the peacefulness of their garden and slept under the pistachio tree! In the next village is a supermarket and a lot of restaurants and cafes. Also easy to reach with a bike.
There are a lot of options for trips, starting with the private museum on site!
So if you’re searching for a peaceful place to camp and are open to an atypical but heartwarming campsite experience, you are at the right place.

Local attractions

Learn all about classic Greek grape varieties like Assyrtiko and Limnio with a guided vineyard and cellar tour at Gerovassiliou Estate (10 minutes’ drive). The visit culminates in a wine-tasting (and wine-pairing) session. There’s also an on-site museum featuring, among other things, a large collection of corkscrews. The Epanomi Wetlands (25 minutes), on a headland to the south, is home to flamingoes, pheasants and other birds. Just off the shore is the Shipwreck Epanomi. Legend has it that this vessel, which had been due to remove land from the delicate wetlands habitat, was abandoned and left to rot, becoming a popular snorkelling destination in the process. In Thessaloniki (40 minutes’ drive), the Archaeological Museum has a vast collection of classical antiquities, while the Heptapyrgion is a multi-turreted fortress. For something more modern, visit the Ataturk Museum, then end the day in monumental Aristotelous Square, watching the sunset over the sea with a glass of ouzo in hand.
