Campingpark Eisenach

Hanging out around the lake and its beach for swimming, sunbathing, fishing and boating will probably be your main port of call for the first few days here; after that, there's loads to see and do in the site surrounds. For active days out, hire a bike on site for pleasant pedals around the surrounding Thuringian woodlands, or hike around the Luther Trail or Drachenschlucht (Dragon's Gorge), three kilometres away. In winter, zip down the slopes over at Rennsteig a 45-minute drive away, where there's a track of 168 kilometres, 120 kilometres' worth of snowboarding, and loop routes of hundreds of kilometres. It's a 20-minute drive from the site (or about 50 by bike if you're feeling fit) to the UNESCO-listed medieval pile of Wartburg Castle, overlooking the town of Eisenach. This historic place was once a refuge for Martin Luther as well as home to Hungarian royalty, and is now one of the most-visited sites in Thuringia. Guided tours are available and there's a museum.
