Active travellers, nature seekers and families all gather together for splendid Saarland holidays at Camping Losheim am See, a spacious 25-acre site on the edge of the village of Losheim am See. This location is a particularly fine one for an outdoor break – it’s a couple of kilometres from the village centre, so you’ll be within easy reach of shops, restaurants, bus stops and the train station. Heading a little further afield, it’s only a short drive to top spots like the Saarschleife Treetop Walk, the fantastic views from Saarpolygon and the UNESCO-listed Völklingen Ironworks. Not that you have to go that far to start taking in the scenery – this site is in the midst of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, with heaps of hiking and bike trails starting just behind the site and setting off into the forest, and the long-distance Saar-Hunsrück Climb not far off (try one of the ‘dream loops’ that run from the main trail if you can’t manage the whole 250 miles). And there’s more… because you’ll be staying right on the banks of Losheim Reservoir too, with access to the water for swimming, sailing and paddleboarding (or a circuit of the lake on foot if you’d rather stay dry). For kids that need even more activity, there’s also a play area and miniature golf on site, plus a restaurant and takeaway to provide fuel for all the family’s antics. Other amenities on site include a food shop, a launderette, showers and toilets, and you’ll be allowed to bring along barbecues or start campfires to keep warm in the evening.

Liked Meal we had in campsite restaurant
Sanitary block was very new and clean ( however rather creepy at night with all the reflections and the sensor lights are slow to respond)

Disliked Arrived at 12. 45 , reception closed at 1.00. Made us wait in the car park until 2.00pm to check in, which entailed taking 20€ from us and giving us a card for the barrier. Not complicated or time consuming.
Asked if we could get a drink while we waited but sadly the restaurant/ cafe was closed.
Campsite was virtually empty so they couldn't say it was because the staff were busy. A lot of other campsites allowed you to check in when you arrived and chose your own pitch at these quiet times.
They put us on a sandy/ gravel pitch right up against a caravan. No other pitch was occupied, VW van then turned up and was located on the other side of us. So close I could virtually touch it from my chair. Ridiculous system. After the overnight rain the sandy gravel stuck to everything and so our van was filthy inside. There were many empty grass pitches we could have used as the site was very quiet.
Tried to do some washing which had to be processed using an app. The whole process didn't work, I paid twice and despite the help of an employee no one could make the machines work. Just gave me my money back but could not override the system to allow me to do my washing. No detergent or conditioner now left as I had put it in the machines .
The restaurants around the lake had very limited opening times and it appeared that after about 2pm you could only get cake. Evening opening times were also quite limited but we did have a very nice meal at the campsite restaurant. It was a breath of fresh air.
My husband asked at reception about fishing and was told he would need a permit which costs about €5( they are actually €15 so staff aren't aware of the facts), he tried to purchase this on line but couldn't. We went to the Tourist Information office the next morning to be told in no uncertain terms that unless you had a German fishing license you couldn't purchase a permit. There are also considerable fines for not having a permit. Oh to feel so welcome as a tourist .
Staff at camp site also told us that there was nothing to do in Losheim and without a car we were pretty much stuck.
I expressed my dissatisfaction on leaving the campsite only to be told that was Germany and their rules.
We won't be back !!

Liked Great site and facilities. Caters for all types of camper with ultramodern toilet blocks, chemical disposal and pot washup. Great access to lake and lake walks from site. Very good free WiFi

Make sure you’ve brought your boots or your bikes along – there are plenty of great trails to follow around here, whether you’re just after a short outing into the forest, a tour of the lake or a more extensive hike along the Saar-Hunsrück Climb. A popular highlight around here is the Saarschleife Treetop Walk (25 minutes’ drive), which follows a trail of a little over a kilometre to a 23-metre-high observation tower that has some stunning views over the trees and the river below. Other favourite outings nearby take guests to places like Montclair Castle (20 minutes), to Wolf Park Werner Freund (20 minutes) or to some more outstanding views at Saarpolygon (40 minutes). The Völklingen Ironworks (40 minutes) is well worth a visit too – this fascinating place has won a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the world's only fully preserved ironworks. Still got days to fill? How about a trip over the border to Luxembourg (an hour), or to France for a day in Metz (an hour and 10 minutes) and Nancy (an hour and 45 minutes)?
