  • Peaceful, family-friendly site in Körperich, by the Gaybach stream
  • On Luxembourg border; visit ‘Little Switzerland’ for Mullerthal Trail
  • Bar, restaurant and playground on site; swimming pool next door
It’s fun to tick off countries while you travel, and with a stay in Körperich you can easily tick off two countries at once. The town is in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district in western Germany, right on the border of Luxembourg. And it’s in Körperich that you’ll find Gaytal Camping Körperich, a family-friendly site with a pretty setup alongside the Gaybach stream. It’s all about the outdoorsy scenes here: courtesy of the cross-border German-Luxembourg Nature Park, scenic strolls through the hills and leisurely riverside bike rides should be high up on your list of things to do. Dogs are welcome at Gaytal, so your pal can accompany you on explores. When you can roam no more, let the on-site bar and restaurant entice you back with refreshing drinks and tasty dishes, like schnitzel, pizzas and salads. There’s a takeaway option on the food, too, just in case you prefer your eats on the go. In high season, the site sets up activities like bingo and music evenings, and there’s a playground on site, which comes in handy when the kids are getting restless. To tire them out some more, the local outdoor pool (which is heated – bonus) is next to the site, with kids' areas, slides, a climbing wall and sunbathing spots. Back at base there’s an amenity block with toilets, showers and a washing-up area. The site also has washing machines and tumble dryers, and the free wifi is site-wide, so there’s no need to all huddle in the same place when you’re checking in with the world.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Good price. Great location, not far from Luxembourg, the Nürburgring, Cochem, etc. Site staff were very friendly and welcoming

Disliked: The tent pitches were right by the road which is loud between 0500 and 2200. The showers and toilets weren’t very clean looking and the shower credit didn’t last 20 minutes but in all fairness the bloke did put on an extra „20 mins“ as we did mention this.

Local attractions

Take advantage of Luxembourg’s proximity and cross the border for an amble around the Mullerthal region (Mëllerdall), also known as ‘Little Switzerland’ (20-minute drive). You’ll want to pack your comfy shoes – the Mullerthal Trail goes on for 112 kilometres, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning woodland views, pretty rock formations and glimpses of the river Sûre (which is also a fine choice if you’re looking for a kayaking location). Keen on castles? The medieval Vianden Castle (10 minutes) is a must-see, and the chairlift is a nifty way to get up to it. Then there’s Renaissance Castle Beaufort (20 minutes) and Bourscheid Castle (half an hour), both worthy of a browse. For more impressive buildings, make your way to Trier (45 minutes), which has several well-preserved Roman structures, including the Trier Imperial Baths complex, Porta Nigra city gate, Trier Saint Peter's Cathedral, the Basilica of Constantine and the ruins of the Trier Amphitheater. Please the kids with a visit to the prehistory-themed park Dinosaurierpark Teufelsschlucht (25 minutes), or for an adult-friendly experience, barrel over to Bitburger Brewery (25 minutes) for a tour and tastings.
