Moor yourself for watery hols at Camping Strandhaus Sonsfeld, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Cleves town of Rees and 25 minutes from Bocholt. This is a top spot for anyone who’s as comfortable on water as on land. On the banks of the Hageneer Meer oxbow lake, this scenic site makes it easy to have splashing time: dive into the swimming area on the edge of the lake, hire rowboats or pedalos to stay dry, and bring along that rod for a bit of fishing. There’s plenty hereabouts for landlubbers too: kids in need of some on-site time can entertain themselves at the playground, on the trampoline or with a match or two of table tennis. There’s a forested area less than five minutes’ walk away for leafy wanders too, and biking and hiking trails nearby for longer jaunts. No need to fret about meal time when activities lead to hunger either… The nearby villages are safe bets for visiting restaurants. Cold drinks are available on site should you want them.

Local attractions

If spending time wandering city streets appeals, this is a particularly well-placed site. The closest city is Oberhausen (half an hour’s drive away) where there’s an aquarium to explore, and an indoor Legoland Discovery Centre provides the building blocks for a top-notch hol. The indoor ski slope in Bottrop is 40 minutes away, as is the city’s impressive tetrahedron sculpture, with climbs of the latter leading to some pretty views over the countryside. More traditional city experiences can be had in Essen 50 minutes from the site, with museums to learn in, a mansion to be envious of, botanic gardens to stroll about and (of course) plenty of shopping to do. City days don’t all have to take place in the present either – LVR-Römermuseum (on the site of the old Roman city of Colonia Uldia Traiana), Germany’s largest archaeological open-air museum, is less than half an hour from base and a must-visit for history buffs keen on seeing reconstructed amphitheatres and temples, experiencing life in ancient times, and watching plenty of re-enactments and shows. Got kids in tow? Make tracks first for Bocholt, 25 minutes away, where the indoor waterpark will keep them entertained (and grownups can treat themselves to spa days), then to Kernie’s Wunderland (15 minutes) to spin around rides and zoom along rollercoasters. Budding zoologists might prefer days among the animals, so make sure Biotopwildpark Anholter Schweiz (15 minutes) and Kleve zoo (half an hour) are on the list.

Disliked: Facilities were run down and it felt like we were camped on a random piece of grass on the site. Too many campers for the size of the place.

Liked: Lady was really nice showed us where to go and tokens for shower.
Nice scenery pitch nxt to lake.

Disliked: Very small and clustered camping pitches.
Like we were in the houses back garden.
Lacked English.

Liked: Wir wurden super lieb empfangen und über den Platz geführt. Wir haben uns selten sofort gut aufgehoben gefühlt - waren mit der Besitzerin den Platzes sofort auf einer Wellenlänge und man hatte das Gefühl, dass sie das mit jeder Person dort war. Super nett einfach Mega zuvorkommen. Gab uns noch 2 Stühle weil wir zu zweit und zu Fuß unterwegs haben und somit auf einer Decke gegessen haben, fragte noch, ob sie uns einen Kaffee bringen soll. Wie lieb!!? Auch ein Stromadapter hat sie uns geliehen, da wir, wie gesagt, zu Fuß waren und nicht viel dabei hatten. Alles fort auf Vertrauensbasis, preis Leistung einfach super. Plus gratis Boot, Tretboot und stand up paddle - einfach klasse. Wir kommen definitiv wieder!!
Vielen lieben Dank für die schöne Zeit!

Disliked: Toiletten hätte eventuell jemand checken können, da die Kinder leider keinen sauberen Platz hinterlassen haben..( Urin auf dem Boden ) aber das sollte man auch eher Kindern beibringen 😅

Liked: Ein super gemütlicher kleiner Platz. Super familiär sauber ich kann es nur weiterempfehlen. So einen erholsamen Urlaub hatte ich schon lange nicht mehr. Es ist trotzdem genügend Platz wenn man seine Ruhe will.

Disliked: Kann beim besten Willen auch nach langem überlegen nichts finden.
