  • Friendly site in the Pilat Regional Natural Park with mountain views
  • Safari de Peaugres 25 mins' drive; 500 metres from the GR65 trail
  • Outdoor pool and restaurant on site; village shop 10 minutes' walk
Picking the Pilat Regional Natural Park is an excellent choice for a holiday – this gorgeous mountainous area is full of options for outdoor activities (walks, watersports and wine tasting among them) and it doesn’t tend to be packed with crowds of people. Tucked away among forest and vineyard surroundings near the village of Saint-Appolinard, Camping Le Cottet makes a great base for exploring this part of the world, whether you’re planning lots of active adventures or a quieter time moving at a slower pace through the scenery. Or even enjoying the scenery while staying put – there’s plenty of space to relax on site, and some lovely views up to the Pic des Trois Dents. A laidback and friendly atmosphere reigns here, with hammocks hanging in the trees and an outdoor pool where everyone can have a good splash around to cool off. The restaurant, La Guinguette, has splendid mountain views and serves up a varied menu including pizzas, salads and local charcuterie/cheese platters, plus a tempting selection of homemade desserts and artisanal ice creams. You can also pick up breakfast and picnic options here. A play area, a pétanque court and a games room (plus kids’ activities in summer) mean there’s always something to do if you like. Meanwhile, all the facilities are in place for essential tasks, including a launderette and kitchen facilities for producing your own meals (pick up supplies at the grocery store in the village or the nearby farm shop).

Local attractions

The easiest way to see some of your natural park surroundings is on foot – perhaps picking a local hiking trail or following a bit of the nearby GR65 (the Way of St James Camino Santiago route). There are mountain bike trails too, or more leisurely rides along the paths by the side of the Rhône (about 10 kilometres away). Something different? How about taking to the skies on a paragliding taster with Eclipse Parapente (20 minutes’ drive), trying out rafting, kayaking and hydrospeeding at Space Eaux Vives (15 minutes) or going fishing at Barrage du Ternay (10 minutes)? There are also numerous vineyards around the area, perhaps best explored on an electric scooter tour. For families, there’s a great day out nearby at Safari de Peaugres (25 minutes) – it’s home to well over a thousand animals, which you can see while exploring on foot or in the car. There are also plenty of extra activities, including a water playground, a play farm and a barefoot trail.
