Holiday in the French Alps? How splendidly sensible of you. Combine a scenic stay with a lakeside one at family-friendly Camping Détente et Clapotis, on the edge of glacial – and rather gorgeous – Lac de Paladru. Camping Détente et Clapotis is in the Isère department, four and a half kilometres from Montferrat and 40 minutes' drive from Grenoble. It's a top pick for peeps looking for a peaceful and restful hol in a spectacular environment, says its team: take a squint at the pics to see if that may be you (spoiler: most probably). There's direct access to a beach area for lots of lakeside lounging – particularly fine when the kids are occupying themselves at the beach volleyball area and water playground – and if you do feel like stirring yourself slightly, there's a heated pool and the likes of fishing, canoeing and kayaking are all available from the site. Bikes are available to hire too for off-site adventuring. Grownup guests are most welcome to book a massage or a sauna session for full pampering while on site – particularly fine when the kids are occupied by the activities organised by the site team… Then, after a lengthy day of site serenity or out and about adventuring, toddle over to the terrace of the Camping Détente et Clapotis restaurant for lengthy eves overlooking the water: local specialities, live music and famed regional wines are all on the menu.

Local attractions

There's loads to do around here if you fancy getting out into the Isère department (if not, of course, there's that lakeside beach and those massages on site…). The lake is your spot for all sort of activities including fishing, summer swimming, waterskiing and sailing, or cycling, hiking or horse riding around the shores if you'd rather stay on terra firma. Your nearest historic pile is 15th-century Château de Virieu 15 minutes' drive away, open from the end of March until the beginning of November. Summer sees activities and events for all ages such as historical re-enactments and murder mysteries by the Dauphiné Blades; workshops in historical cooking and weaponry, and sessions in sword fighting and fencing. If you need a slight rest after all that (likely), the château is also home to spacious and peaceful gardens. Townwise, trot along to Montferrat about 10 minutes' drive away, or to one of the three nearby gateway settlements of the Chartreuse: Voiron (20 minutes), Grenoble (40 minutes) and Chambéry (45 minutes).

Liked: The site was beautiful thoroughly recommend. The pitch was lovely right by the lake, fresh croissants brought to your caravan each morning if wanted and the staff were all really friendly and despite us only speaking English really tried hard to make our stay perfect.

Disliked: Restaurant only served muscles and chips for tea so don’t expect choice
