  • Peaceful site five minutes’ drive from Lugrin, with Lake Geneva views
  • Évian-les-Bains 10 minutes’ drive; Montreux 55 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; playground and table tennis; launderette and drying room
On a hillside overlooking Lake Geneva (and backed by a lushly wooded massif), Camping Le Rys takes some beating when it comes to spectacular locations. This peaceful site in the Haute-Savoie department of eastern France spreads over two hectares just outside the lakeside resort of Lugrin (five minutes’ drive). Watersports are the main attraction here, and there are two lakeside beaches within a kilometre of the site (a 15-minute walk): Plage de Vindry (pebbly) and Plage de Tourronde (a mix of grass and pebbles). Both are popular with swimmers and paddleboarders, and both have far-reaching views of Switzerland, on the opposite shore of the lake. Please note that dogs are not allowed at either beach, though they are welcome at Le Rys (as long as they are well behaved); in addition, many of the walking paths in the surrounding area are dog-friendly. After a day at the beach, or on the forested trails, or on the Saix de Miolène climbing route (40 minutes), leave the kids to make new friends in the playground or at the ping-pong tables while you get the barbecue going with supplies from the shops in Lugrin. The town is also a top spot to sample the local cuisine, which features rich cheesy dishes such as fondue and tartiflette (a cheese, potato and bacon extravaganza). On-site amenities include a drying room (most useful after a day of lake swimming), a launderette and a toilet/shower block; one of the showers is large enough to accommodate guests with limited mobility.

What customers say

This campground boasts a lovely, elevated spot overlooking Lake Geneva, with spacious, terraced sites and amazing views. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Facilities are basic but kept very clean. A pleasant 15-20 minute walk gets you to the lake, and there are nearby woods for dog walks.

Power optional grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Nice helpful hosts, nicely layed out site, great location, pitches level and individual.

Disliked Not so much a 'dislike' more a need for a slightly larger footprint. Our tent fitted well but then our car was left over-hanging the drive way.

Nothing fancy but it was an ideal stop for the TDF time trials.

Power optional grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked A lovely little site, with terraces that you can see the lake from. Several trees to get shade. Superb restaurant within 10mins Restaurant chez Mathilde

Disliked Facilities could have been better. No loo roll or hand cleaner, and no detector to turn on bathroom lights at night. No hooks in shower enclosure. With a bit of thought and a few hundred euros they could be a lot better. They were however clean

Local attractions

Treat yourself to a wellness day at Les Thermes d’Evian, in Évian-les-Bains (10 minutes’ drive), where you can book facial treatments and massages, or just enjoy the thermal waters. Afterwards, check out the exhibitions at the elegant Villa Lumière, a former baths, or stroll along the Promenade Quai Baron de Blonay Evian, taking in views of the distant mountains. From Évian-les-Bains, sail across Lake Geneva to Lausanne (a 35-minute trip). Exhibits at The Olympic Museum include the very first Olympic flag, devised in 1913, and equipment and outfits worn by sporting competitors. The Pavillon Thaïlandais is an ornate wooden structure in leafy, lakefront Parc du Denantou. Cross the border into Switzerland and head to Montreux (55 minutes), whose most beloved resident (probably) was the late Freddie Mercury. A statue of the flamboyant Queen frontman stands on the shore of Lake Geneva. If you’re into live music, try to time your holiday with the Montreux Jazz Festival (early July), which sees performances by rock and pop bands too.
