- Private-use Ardèche Cévennes site with Thines river valley views
- Adrenaline sports and the Bois de Païolive within half an hour’s drive
- Off-grid tipi with wooden decking on stilts and an outdoor kitchen
Looking for complete solitude? Untamed landscapes and river views? Sounds like you should be heading for Ardèche River Glamping, where a single tipi is set overlooking the Thines river valley in the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park. You can recharge your batteries surrounded by dramatic rock formations, swim in pools off private river beaches or stroll through the woods – and no-one will even know you’re there.
You’ll have to be pretty self-sufficient as this is proper off-grid camping with minimal comfort. The seven-metre tipi was crafted locally and follows the traditional design of Lakota Native Americans. It sleeps up to four guests in a queensize and two single beds, is fully insulated and lighting is provided by candles and solar panels. Candles, duvets, blankets and a cooler with ice packs are provided with sheets and towels available for an additional fee.
Set on a wooden terrace supported by stilts, the tipi has a covered outdoor kitchen equipped with the basics and supplied with gas and spring water. There’s also a dry toilet and solar shower, a trampoline under the chestnut trees and decent 4G network coverage (but no wifi). All fires are strictly prohibited. There’s parking on a paved road nearby, and the property is fenced so any dogs will be secure and safe.

Local attractions
The Thines river is accessible on foot in five minutes via a private path winding through chestnut trees and between granite boulders; once there you can soak up the sun and go wild swimming in refreshing pools. All the adrenaline-inducing activities of the Ardèche Cévennes are within half an hour’s drive in Chassezac Canyon: kayaking, canyoning, mountain biking, paragliding, caving, climbing and fly fishing among others.
The gorgeous hilltop village of Thines (15 minutes’ drive) has a 12th-century church perched on a rocky outcrop – and if you’ve a taste for quality local produce, the Auberge de Thines sells Ardèche charcuterie and cheeses. Nearby, you can buy delicious ice cream from Maison du Gerboul, which also sells regional crafts and local guide books. Both places have far-reaching views overlooking the spectacular Thines valley.
You can explore the bizarre rock formations at the Bois de Païolive (half an hour), while the big-hitting attractions of the Gorges de l’Ardèche are further afield. A day trip allows you to swim around the natural rock arch at Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (50 minutes), and check out the replica paintings of prehistoric bison and mammoths at Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (an hour).
