  • Family-run, family-friendly site with pool on the banks of the Rhône
  • Half an hour's drive from kayaking and walking in the Ardèche gorges
  • River fishing and walks from site; kids club, restaurant and bike hire
Fond of roaring rapids and grand rivers? Camping du Lion is your ideal territory, a family-friendly site on the banks of the Rhône and close to the Ardèche gorges justly called France’s Grand Canyon. A few minutes' drive from the town of Bourg-Saint-Andéol, this well-maintained spot has been looked after by the same family for the past fifty years and they’ve got it down to a fine art. It’s a roomy site, full of trees and surrounded by woods providing shade and privacy away from the road. The washrooms are spacious and clean with hot showers, and adapted access for disabled users. Families appreciate the parent-baby bathrooms and the on-site laundry, all handily located so no-one wastes holiday time trekking about doing chores... More cunning planning ensures you can sit on the terrace of the bar and restaurant, sipping a coffee or sampling local cuisine whilst watching your offspring splashing in the pool. Alongside a well-equipped playground, daily activities are laid on for the kids in the summer months, plus shows and quizzes for the family in the evenings. Hire bikes from the site to ride straight onto the paths down the Rhône, or into Bourg-Saint-Andéol (five minutes on two wheels or four) for shops, eats and treats. If you're feeling brave, bike it over to La Ferme Aux Crocodiles (10 minutes by car) to see around 400 of the toothy terrors sharing space with giant tortoises and tropical birds.

Local attractions

As you’ll see from the river banks, the Rhône is a prime spot for catching pike, black bass and trout, and fishing permits can be purchased in town. It’s also great for riverside strolls and cycles, linking up with the Via Rhôna pilgrim route linking the Swiss lakes to the Mediterranean. If you’d rather be on the water, make for Saint-Martin d’Ardèche (20 minutes) to canoe your way down the famed gorges, take boat cruises at a slower pace or lounge around on the river beach. It’s around half an hour’s drive to the Cave du Pont d’Arc, a network of massive limestone caverns where you can see replicas of the Palaeolithic paintings from nearby Chauvet Cave. Like the similar set-up at Aven d’Orgnac (40 minutes away), the theme-park feel doesn’t detract from the beauty of the paintings or the surrounding scenery: both make a good base for walks through the famed gorges. For thrills of a more 21st-century kind, you can have a go on the flight simulators at ELLIP’6 in Pierrelatte (10 minutes), plump for laser tag and paintballing at Game Park Loisirs in Malataverne (20 minutes), and high ropes treetops adventure stuff at Vert-Tige, half an hour away.
