  • Peaceful and spacious Pays Mellois site 10 mins' drive from the RN10
  • A 45-minute drive to Poitiers and Futuroscope; Angoulême an hour
  • Swimming pool, sauna, spa and e-bike hire on site; meals on request
Need a properly rural little haven of peace surrounded by scenic and serene countryside – but also a spot that’s easily accessible from the main road for easy journeys in and out? In the Poitou-Charentes countryside near Messé and Vanzay, Natura Serena fits the bill rather nicely – this spacious site is in the midst of some splendidly quiet Pays Mellois landscape, and yet it's only about a 10-minute drive from the RN10, about halfway between Poitiers and Angoulême (under an hour's drive from both). That location makes this spot a particularly handy one for those simply seeking a stopover on a lengthy journey – but also a fine base for a longer holiday spent exploring the area, taking in the local towns, hitting attractions like Futuroscope and La Vallée Des Singes, or staying local for walks, bike rides market visits to sample the local specialities (goat’s cheese is a particular favourite around here…) There may be plenty of space on site, but it’s only shared by a small number of guests so you’ll never feel like you're hemmed in. All the essential facilities are provided, including a bathroom (with large shower, toilet and washbasin), an additional outdoor toilet, a washing-up sink, a wifi connection and chemical toilet disposal. You’ll also be able to rent e-bikes on site to explore the area, and then come back to a nice relaxing swim in the outdoor pool or some time in the sauna or spa. Barbecues are permitted on site, and the owners also offer catering (breakfast, dinners, snacks and drinks) with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: Only van on site, so very quiet and peaceful. The shower/toilet was really clean and adjacent. A very helpful and friendly hostess who was helped position our 8.5m van and car trailer perfectly on flat ground. Thank you, we enjoyed our 1 night stay.

Disliked: Due to early September, there were lots of flies, but somewhat to be expected.

Local attractions

Both Poitiers (45 minutes' drive) and Angoulême (an hour) are well worth some of your time – in the first you can visit various historic churches and in the second take a walk around the old ramparts before stopping in at the cartoon museum. It's worth noting that the excellent Futuroscope theme park is just outside Poitiers too. For more on the heritage front, draw up a list that includes the chambered tombs of Tumulus de Montioux (five minutes), Château de Javarzay (half an hour) and Château d’Epanvilliers (15 minutes), home to a museum of ancient games. History of a different sort is on display at Monet Goyon Museum (25 minutes), which houses a collection of old motorbikes. While you're here you should also make time for a trip to the La Vallée Des Singes (25 minutes), a walk or boat trip through the lush landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (an hour) and a day of following the goat's cheese route around local farms.
