Around the site

  • Small, friendly family-run site just outside Chef-Boutonne
  • An hour's drive to Futuroscope; 40 minutes to the Marais Poitevin
  • Heated pool and bar/restaurant with live music and quizzes
Get ready with your Poitou-Charentes holiday wishlist, for Camping Le Moulin is a place that ticks many boxes. Small family-run site with a friendly atmosphere? Tick. Rural peace? Tick (and with the bonus of the river Boutonne running just past the site for added prettiness). And it scores well on the convenience front too, as it’s a mere two kilometres from the centre of Chef-Boutonne, a small town that’s big enough to be home to a couple of supermarkets, three bars, two restaurants and a clutch of shops. A smart château and a fishing lake are within walking distance too, and there are plenty of places to go for a bike ride or walk (with your dog if you wish) so you’ll have something to do even if you don’t fancy getting in the car. If even that seems like too much effort (you are on holiday, after all), it’s not hard to amuse yourselves on site: perhaps with a dip in the heated swimming pool, a game of table tennis or some time watching the kids have fun at the play area. As you may have guessed from the name (or spotted from the pictures), the site centres around an old watermill, which has now been converted to house the site’s bar/restaurant, opening out onto a lovely poolside terrace. This is the place to go for meals of local and international dishes, and for the live music and quizzes that run throughout July and August (and once a month in low season).

What customers say

This country campsite gets props for its friendly owners, peaceful vibe, and nice pool. The on-site restaurant's a hit, especially the Sunday roast. Pitches are neat, though washrooms (showers, toilets) could use a spruce-up, despite being clean. Managers are looking into washroom upgrades. Access can be tricky if you don't have codes.

Liked Great site. All you need there if you want a quiet holiday and are self sufficient. Very friendly. If you can't get in shout for Nigel. Great pool. Bit of a walk to the village centre. Bike rides are easy.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked Le calme

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely campsite in really rural area, incredibly quiet at night. Nice pool good facilities for basic camping (no frills) good pitch with trees for hammocks. Nice village for walks etc.

Disliked Pool closed 1 day a week, lots of English campers on site so didn’t get to practice much French language. Not loads to do in area if staying for a while.

Local attractions

Make your first port of call the gorgeous Château de Javarzay, a Renaissance gem 10 minutes’ walk from the site. Once you’ve toured the elegant interior, take a wander around the grounds which include an arboretum and a fishing lake (open to visitors subject to certain conditions). If your idea of outdoor time skews more towards the active end of things, there are places for kayaking and go-karting within a half-hour drive, and the Feel Nature adventure park (35 minutes' drive) is a good option for kids who feel inspired to get up into the treetops. Other days out nearby might take you to have a wander around towns like Niort (40 minutes) or Angoulême (an hour) or to explore the waterways of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (40 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along, it’s well worth planning a day out at Futuroscope theme park (an hour) too – it’s one of the country’s most visited attractions for very good reason…
