  • Spacious pitches at a friendly family-run site in rural Charente
  • Confolens 15 minutes' drive; 25 minutes to Oradour-sur-Glane
  • Open-air pool on site, plus sociable bar area for drinks and snacks
There’s a fabulous 22 acres at the estate that’s home to Camping Le Maingaud, but guest numbers are always kept very low. And you know what that means? Space – and plenty of it. Just the thing for a chilled-out break in the Charente countryside… Pick a pitch here and you’ll be a guest of Emily and Dries and their two daughters, a friendly family that offer a multilingual welcome to families, couples, solo travellers and groups. Dogs are welcome too, with their own exercise area to run around in; elsewhere on site you’ll need to keep them on a lead and under supervision as deer cross the grounds pretty much on a daily basis (much to the delight of guests seeking a proper countryside experience). You’ll be staying on pitches that are kept cool by the shade of century-old trees and have access to lots of handy amenities including wifi, a washing-up area and a modern bathroom block with toilets and showers (including wheelchair-accessible facilities). An outdoor pool is on hand for refreshing dips and family splashes, and there’s also a sociable bar that’s open every day for cool beers, local wines, ice creams and local snacks. The local area is dotted with small restaurants and bars for a taste of the area; for self-catering supplies your nearest shops are in Brigueuil (five minutes’ drive) or Confolens (15 minutes). And there are plenty of ways to work up an appetite or thirst as well, whether you’re planning outdoor activities like hiking, cycling and kayaking or prefer to take in the historical attractions of Chassenon and Oradour-sur-Glane.

Local attractions

There are plenty of gorgeous walking trails around this area, including paths along the banks of the Vienne river and routes through the northern stretches of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. There are also canoes and kayaks for hire in Confolens (15 minutes’ drive), a vélorail to ride from Gare de Roumazières (25 minutes) and treetop trails at Aventure Parc Massignac (half an hour). The surrounding area is packed with little villages and traditional towns to explore as well – one of the most striking is Oradour-sur-Glane (25 minutes), razed to the ground during World War II and now left in ruins as a moving tribute to the murdered citizens. For more of the area’s history, visit the Gallo-Romain thermal baths at Cassinomagus - Archaeological Park (15 minutes) or check out grand buildings such as Château de Rochebrune (10 minutes) and the Castle of Saint-Germain-de-Confolens (20 minutes). If that's all too much for the kids, take them instead to Feeriland (25 minutes), which has play areas, a model village and activities galore for youngsters.
