  • Peaceful and friendly site in a green riverside setting
  • Direct access to the gardens of Surgères's castle
  • Pool, aqua yoga, weekly pony rides, and snack bar by the pool terrace
This is a pretty place… And in a mighty pretty region too: peaceful and friendly Camping de la Gères is within easy reach of numerous Charente Maritime attractions and highlights: it's a few minutes' stroll from the handsome old town of Surgères, half an hour from the Atlantic coast, and 45 minutes from the spectacular sights of La Rochelle. Named after the Gères river flowing alongside the site, Camping de la Gères is a family site shaded by trees and hedges, with room aplenty around its grounds and woodland for ambles and play. There's direct access from the site to the gardens of Surgères's castle for more of the same… or you could hire a bike from the team to take out on the local cycle paths… or hoist the kids along to the weekly pony rides trotting off into the countryside. Loads of leisure options are around for days on site: options include dips or aqua gym and aqua yoga sessions in the heated pool, basks on the loungers alongside, pétanque competitions and music quizzes, and a summer kids' club three times a week to keep small sorts entertained (activities and entertainment in July and August only). Take yourself too for lengthy wanders around Surgères (500 metres away through the castle gardens) and its plentiful markets including a covered market three times a week, a monthly outdoor market, and a weekly craft market arranged by the Camping de la Gères team. Regional produce should be investigated at most of these; for other eats – and drinks – the site snack bar (open mid-June to mid-September) sells light bites, beer and cocktails, to have at the pool terrace or to take away.

What customers say

This well-kept campsite has a friendly welcome and clean facilities, with many praising the spotless toilets and showers. Pitches are generally a good size, often with hedges for privacy, and the location is excellent for walking into Surgeres town. Some minor drawbacks include narrow pitches for larger vehicles, and one review mentioned issues with an unpleasant owner and noisy river. The pool, while clean, is noted as being small. Overall, it's considered a great stopover and base for exploring.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Nice small campsite of about 50 plots. Mix of static holiday homes, shephards huts, and pitches for motorhomes and tents. Small swimming pool with children's slide which is nice to cool down in. We stayed 7th - 11th Aug and found there to be a lot of mosquitos. Maybe due to the site being next to a (empty) river. Nice little bar. Staff are nice but will not hesitate to let you know if you are breaking the rules. 10 minute walk in to Surgeres which is a nice little town with a beautiful church and gardens surrounded by walls. While we were there, they had street markets filling up every street with live music as well. Some nice restaurants as well. Nice boulangerie next door. Good location for La Rochelle.

Disliked No soap at all by any sink.
Mosquitos.
Gate to site is shut at 10pm, which we weren't told about so we had to sleep in the car park.

Liked Great site with lovely welcome. Pitch was nice size for car/caravan. Facilities were great quality, always clean. Bar is great for a cold beer and a decent basic meal for your arrival night.
A five minute walk into the town, which has a good selection of restaurants.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked On arrival I was a little worried about the number of pitches, in such a small area. And the number of children all around the site.
Being a solo male, this site was not a good fit. However that said, all aspects were run well and surprisingly all the children, were in bed early.
The facilities were all good and the location, next to Surgeres centre was excellent.
For families this is a good site !!

Disliked More critique rather than criticism…..

Not really my sort of site, but well run and very clean.

Liked My sister and I had another lovely stay at Camping de la Gères
We were lucky enough to stop over twice this year and each time we were greeted by friendly owners and a spotlessly clean site.
Also on our last 2 nights we were treated to wonderful live music from a festival being held in the grounds of Surgères chateau, which run almost alongside on edge of the campsite.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Lovely campsite. Very well run and facilities very clean. Friendly hosts. We were given a shady pitch which was a relief in the heat. Good bar and swimming pool area. We will definitely be back. Probably will bring grandchildren as it’s very family friendly. Even had WiFi which was an unexpected bonus. Thank you.
