  • Well-equipped bell tents near Plage des Grenettes, on the Ile de Ré
  • Vauban fortifications 10 minutes’ drive; La Rochelle half an hour
  • Heated outdoor pool and waterslide; cycle hire; organised activities
The sandy expanse of Plage des Grenettes is within a pleasant 300-metre stroll when you stay at Kampaoh Ile de Ré, a well-equipped spot in a grove of maritime pines on the south coast of the island. Accommodation is in large bell tents with power outlets, a lockable storage box and vintage-y decor touches – from pastel-coloured coolers (that you can take to the beach) to bamboo clothes rails. Mosquito nets keep unwelcome guests at bay. And, of course, there are real (and real comfortable!) beds, which come with all bed linens; bath towels are also provided. On-site leisure facilities include a heated outdoor swimming pool and a children’s pool with a waterslide; an entertainment team is on hand to organise activities and events for guests both young and old. Renowned for its cycling routes, Ile de Ré just begs to be explored on two wheels, which are available for hire on site. A 23-km bike ride (sounds like a lot, but you can break it up by stopping halfway at L’Huitrière de Ré for a seafood tasting) takes you to the 19th-century Phare des Baleines lighthouse. This is the westernmost point of the island, and you know what that means: epic sunsets over the Bay of Biscay. Or you might prefer to take it easy(ish) and cycle into Sainte-Marie-de-Ré (15 minutes) to check out the local food market and restaurants. If you don’t fancy straying too far from the comforts of your bell tent, there’s a supermarket and a bar/pizzeria on site. Other amenities include a launderette, plus showers and a toilet block.

Local attractions

Historic sights around the island include the ruins of the 12th-century Abbaye des Châteliers, on the north coast; and the Vauban fortifications – built in the 1680s – in the town of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Both are a 10-minute drive (25 minutes by bike) from the site. A stroll around the Vieux Port in La Rochelle (half an hour) yields views of the two medieval towers protecting the harbour, the Grosse Horloge (a stone city gate topped by an ornate clock tower), La Grande Roue Ferris wheel and plenty of elegant yachts. The Musée Maritime de La Rochelle explores the town’s naval history. The dunes and salt marshes of the Réserve Naturelle de Lilleau des Niges (35 minutes) attract a wide variety of resident and migratory birds, including shelducks, curlews and oystercatchers. The local chapter of the Bird Protection League arranges themed walks with a wildlife expert.
