It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful wooded site 15 minutes' bike ride from Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron
- Beach 200 metres away along a quiet shaded footpath
- Wellness area and bike hire on site, plus kids' activities in summer
‘Sous bois’ is a very fine place to be on a warm summer day – and there’s certainly plenty of scope for time spent ‘under the trees’ at Camping Sous Bois, a spacious wooded Charente-Maritime site on the island of Oléron.
‘Sur la plage’ is an equally fine place to be, and likewise that’s easily achieved as there’s a beach 200 metres away along a quiet tree-lined footpath. It’s a tiptop spot to go rockpooling for periwinkles, barnacles and the like; for a proper swimming beach, it’s best to head a bit further along the coast to Bonnes or Matha, both within 20 minutes on a bike.
Such dips in the Atlantic can be on the bracing side at times, so folk who like a guarantee of warmth may like to turn their attentions to the site’s wellness area, which has a hot tub and a sauna. Take that wellness a step further by signing up for one of the yoga or zumba classes that run on site through the summer; this of course then entitles you to feel guilt-free when buying more local wine and cakes from reception.
Activities aren’t limited to just the fitness classes; there’s also pony rides, ping pong tournaments and clown shows for the kids, and evenings of live music karaoke and dancing for all ages. Bikes can be hired on site too, for those who’d like to pedal their way along the island’s extensive network of quiet paths and up to the nearest town, Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, for supplies.

Local attractions
Bikes are a great way to get about on Oléron, but they’re not the only option. Head up to Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron (15 minutes by bike) to swap your two wheels for horse rides or paddleboarding trips through the scenic salt marshes that surround the town. If it’s not a holiday until you’ve unpacked the golf clubs, head to the other side of the island for a round with a sea-view at Golf Club Oléron (20 minutes’ drive).
Island hols inevitably mean seafood suppers should be on the menu – if the idea of fresh lobsters, langoustines and the like get mouths watering, head over to La Cotiniére, a kilometre away. Around the harbour are lots of restaurants serving up the day’s haul, along with boat trips to see if you can catch your own (plus a daily market for when you can’t…)
Elsewhere around the island recommended outings include boat trips to ex-military prison Fort Boyard from Boyardville (15 minutes’ drive), riding the waterslides at Iléo waterpark (15 minutes) and learning about the stuff known as ‘white gold’ at Port des Salines salt museum (20 minutes).
