  • Lively family site on the east coast of Île d’Oléron
  • Boyardville beach and Fort Boyard boat trips a short walk away
  • Waterpark on site, plus busy summer activity programme for all ages
With a beach a short walk away in one direction and some of the island’s salt marshes in the other, Camping Signol is well placed for an Île d’Oléron holiday among lovely scenery. And it’s well placed on the amenities front too, as it’s in the village of Boyardville, a few minutes’ walk from the port and a cluster of places to eat. The port is a good place to pick up boat trips to one of the island’s top attractions – Fort Boyard, which you’ll also be able to see from afar at Boyardville beach (10 minutes’ walk away). Getting out to explore the rest of the island should also be easy from this central location – if you can tear yourselves away from all the activities on site, that is. After all, a playground, bouncy castles, a volleyball court and a pair of multisport courts beckon – not to mention the waterpark with its heated pool, waterslides and splash park. A gym, a sauna and a hammam are available at the wellness area, and if you time it right you’ll be able to spend a bit of time there while your youngsters are busy with the various activities of the kids’ club or teens’ club (both of which run almost every day in high season). Or maybe you’d rather join in with the activities too? There’s also a daytime programme for grownups and family-friendly entertainment several evenings per week. You’ll need to find a bit of time to eat and drink too – facilities on site include a grocery store, a bar, a snack bar (with takeaways) and a bread and pastry service for your breakfasts.

Local attractions

Cycling is probably the best way to get around on Oléron – and you can hire bikes on site if you’ve not been able to bring your own. There are lots of great cycle paths nearby, taking you through places like the wildlife-filled Marais aux Oiseaux, past the colourful seaside cabins and through the salt marshes to Port des Salines (45 minutes by bike), where you can learn all about traditional salt production. You can also use your bike for speedy trips to the beach – or simply walk to Boyardville beach in about 10 minutes. This long sandy stretch has plenty of space for games and sandcastles, and the water is great for swimming or watersports. Nearby, don’t miss the chance to take a boat trip for a closer look at Fort Boyard, a little way out to sea. Other outings to consider include Parc Myocastors animal park (10 minutes’ drive) and the imposing Château-d’Oléron (15 minutes).
