  • Family holiday park on the west coast of Oléron in Charente-Maritime
  • Beach five minutes’ walk; Centre Aquatique Iléo half an hour’s drive
  • Swimming pools, Jacuzzi, play area, bike rental and restaurant on site
Everything is geared up for families at Les Seulières, a laidback holiday park with Atlantic Ocean views on the Isle of Oléron in the Charente-Maritime. Why is it so good for kids? Well, the site is quiet and safe, in summer nearby Plage des Huttes beach is supervised, there are two heated swimming pools, it has a play area… and so it goes on. Teens also get their own spot for chilling and having fun – an area dedicated to playing darts and table tennis, plus a video-game station where they can hang out with friends of their own age. At Les Seulières, adults are not forgotten either: a quiet corner for reading and snoozing by the sun deck, a Jacuzzi for soaking away any stresses you may have brought along, and an outdoor fitness area for those who'd like to maintain their workout routine. Outdoorsy families can also rent bikes at the park and discover some of the flat cycle paths around the island. Catering matters are all taken care of too, with a terrace bar open for all-day snacks (continental breakfast can be ordered the day before), and a simple menu full of dishes that should please even fussy kids. In high season, seafood and freshly made pizza are available twice a week.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Nice quiet site near the beach. Good facilities, push button showers but they had temperature controls. Good washing up area. Great welcome from the host. Good level pitches well spaced. Swimming pool, spa and snack bar all looked good but we did not use them. Good free wi-fi

Disliked: Insects: my wife suffered lots of insect bites on the evening of our first night. Take lots of repellent and ensure you have antihistamine treatments available. There’s nothing the site can do about this but a warning would have been helpful. The host was sympathetic and offered cream if we needed it

Liked: Very helpful and friendly welcome at reception. Facilities are plentiful for the number of pitches and always very clean. Beautiful beach across the road, and situated next to one of the many designated cycle paths on the island.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Location is fantastic if you want quiet with minimal 'animation' (lots of other sites on the island offer this by the bucketful, so if you want this go to one of them please!). Easy to unwind here, lots of walks and beach across the road. All the staff were fantastic, but a special mention for Anneke & her husband who made our stay so memorable! We did hear the frogs occasionally which was great as we are in the country. Facilities are great (although a few mirrors by the sinks would be a bonus) and were always spotless. (And breaking news...loo paper will be available for the 2024 season, now there's a bonus!) Plentiful very hot water for washing dishes and clothes, and look out for the feathered visitors who like to watch you.... And there's even a washing machine but make sure you read the instructions very carefully! Restaurant served tasty pizza, and not for us but Mussels on a Monday night but you have to book. Closed Tuesdays. If you do go, walk (we did) or cycle to the lighthouse (Phare de Chassiron), and take a trip to Le Chateau-d'Orleron too.

Disliked: Nothing... wish I could come up with something though; we only discovered this site this year, and I think it is going to become very popular...

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Warm welcome, super helpful. Able to choose pitch and pitches are of a good size. Everyone on site was respectful; there wasn’t excessive noise at any time during the day or night. We never queued for facilities, all of which were clean and in good working order. The beach is only a few minutes walk away and to say it isn’t crowded would be an understatement. We’re coming back next year, armed with our bikes. We wanted to totally relax and had booked at Les Seulières for a week with the intention of moving on somewhere else. After two days we were so relaxed here that we booked a second week and are thoroughly enjoying it. If the staff alone aren’t a selling point, then the scenery, access to beaches, surfing and miles of cycleways certainly are. I’m sure it’s just us who hadn’t managed to hear about this place before and I’m trying hard not to shout too loudly about it now, for fear that there won’t be room for us next year. This is an absolute gem.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Proximity to the beach

Disliked: No chef and therefore no food apart from pizzas. The receptionist making a fuss about us shortening our stay in spite of the campsite having a lot of empty spaces. No freezer to leave ice bloks.

Local attractions

Backed by grassy dunes, Plage des Huttes (five minutes’ walk) is a long stretch of sandy beach that's well known for watersports; here you can hire all the gear to go surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and body-boarding – in fact any kind of surfing. Lifeguards are in attendance during the school summer holidays. For family excursions around Oléron, hire bikes and set out on 160 kilometres of cycle paths; depending on the route chosen, they’ll take you past oyster shacks, sandy beaches, salt marshes or vineyards in the north of the island. If your offspring are too young for bikes, jump on the free shuttle (high season only), which stops off at beaches, Chassiron Lighthouse (10 minutes’ drive), Château d’Oléron (35 minutes) and Centre Aquatique Iléo (half an hour) among other family-friendly attractions. A holiday in this part of France is incomplete without a visit to a market, so to sample the best local produce, head for Marché de La Cotinière (25 minutes). The stalls are loaded with fresh seafood (including oysters in season), fresh breads, regional cheeses and a fine array of colourful fruit and veg; there’s nowhere better to put together a picnic and eat it overlooking the neighbouring fishing harbour.
