Between Bordeaux (think of all the wine you could drink…) and La Rochelle, with its splendid beaches (about 100 kilometres, or one hour’s drive, to either destination), Moulins de la Vergne occupies the site of a former flour mill on the banks of the river Seugne. It’s a blissfully peaceful spot with level grass pitches shaded by lush trees – just the ticket for a little relaxation in the Charente-Maritime department. The site sits just outside Pons (accessed by a five-minute drive on the D234), a historic town on the route from Tours to Santiago de Compostela. People around these parts have been welcoming pilgrims and visitors for centuries, and you and your family (including your dog, who must be kept on a leash) will be greeted warmly here. The main building houses the reception area, the restaurant and the bathrooms (with showers and a bath); there is also a launderette, a washing-up area and a drinking-water tap. And good news for anglers, too: the proximity to the river means you can whip out your fishing gear and (try to) catch pike and perch. When it’s time to explore, Moulins de la Vergne puts you within easy driving distance of a whole load of interesting sights. You already know about Bordeaux and its vineyards, but this area is also famed for its production of brandy in and around Cognac (half an hour). At the Rémy Martin Estate (20 minutes), for example, you can learn about the distilling and ageing processes and enjoy a tasting with nibbles.

Liked A quiet site with all the facilities that we needed (3 nights). Our host could not have been more welcoming. No unnecessary frills, just a pitch, water and electric, (with showers etc. nearby). Lots of shade. Town within 3km walking distance (mostly off-road' good for the 2 dogs) and The Gironde a short drive.

Disliked Although I've marked 'Facilities/Activities down a bit, this only reflects the fact that it's a campsite, not a 5 star theme park. You get what you pay for, and this site is excellent value for money.

Disliked Not nice at all. Scruffy site with lots of “residents”. Bit like a travellers encampment. Only one male and one female toilet for the whole site. The male one was broken. I reported and to the manager who didn’t seem bothered and said that I would have to use the female one!

Disliked Er is al jaren geen onderhoud meer gepleegd, het is vervallen.
Ooit moet dit een mooie camping geweest zijn, nu is het eerder een toevluchtsoord voor dak- en thuislozen.

Liked Not much, we turned around and left.

Disliked The pictures are unfortunately very out of date, so we felt quite misled. It was very overgrown, the boat pictured was sunk and looked like it had been for a while, and the bar was not welcoming and instead just covered in stuff. Toilets were very old and in bad condition, also really far from the campsite. It more felt like people were living on the campsite, which is fine but it didn't feel like a welcoming site at all. As this wasn't at all what we expected, we left pretty quickly. I'm sure it used to be lovely!

Liked Friendly and polite staff. Beautiful site. Easy access. Location is very convenient for access to A10. Restaurant looked lovely, didn’t eat there but will next time we visit. Quiet site. Very reasonable price. Accepts twin axle caravans.
