Some of the most renowned Cognac distilleries are at your fingertips (or at least within a short drive) when you stay at Camping Onlycamp Le Paradis, a peaceful site on the outskirts of the historic town of Pons (five minutes’ drive or a 10-minute walk), in the Charente-Maritime department of western France.
Large and well-maintained grassy pitches sit in the shade of tall trees here. The rustling leaves (and the flowing waters of the nearby Soute river) ought to lull you to sleep – at night, on a hot summer afternoon or after an over-enthusiastic sampling of the local drink…
There are swings and ping-pong tables in the playground (not to mention heaps of safe, fenced-off space to run around in), so the kids can keep themselves occupied. In addition (and happily), the site has struck a special deal with the nearby municipal swimming pool (a five-minute walk away), which means that guests at the site get to swim for free. The pool also has a shallower child-friendly basin with a waterslide.
Back at the site, a kiosk sells ice creams, drinks and sweet and savoury treats, while a small shop stocks all the essentials; for anything else you might need, head into Pons, where there are bakeries and grocery stores, as well as numerous dining spots.
The toilet block includes hot-water showers and facilities for disabled guests, and there is also a baby changing area, a launderette and a washing-up area.

Local attractions
It would be almost criminal not to take advantage of your proximity to Cognac to explore some of the local distilleries, many of which arrange guided tours and tastings of their liquid nectar. Domaine de Birius (five minutes’ drive), just on the other side of Pons, also runs cocktail workshops and musical soirées with apéro.
Le Château des Enigmes (five minutes) is a theme park on the grounds of an elegant Renaissance castle. Among the attractions here are a small farm with pygmy goats, a treetop course and a wooded area dotted with the clues for a treasure hunt.
The Gironde Estuary (half an hour) is a top spot for a waterfront hike, stopping at places like the Ermitage monolithe de Mortagne-sur-Gironde, an 11th-century hermitage carved out of a cliff; the museum at the Gallo-Roman site of Le Fâ, with its archaeological collection; and assorted scenic points.
