It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful glamping site on the edge of the village of Brie-sous-Archiac
- Half an hour's drive from brandy producers in Cognac
- Meal basket deliveries, barbecues and guest kitchen
It pays to be an early bird when you’re staying at L'Abri des Chênes – sunrise around these parts can be truly spectacular (off you pop to check the pics for some rather colourful evidence).
But fret not if you’re allergic to early mornings, as the long-range rural views are equally excellent by day from this peaceful glamping site just outside the village of Brie-sous-Archiac. And there’s plenty of space around the place to settle down to gaze out over the scenic countryside – perhaps while nibbling on a meal you prepared in the kitchen (with microwave, gas hob and a barbecue) or the contents of a picnic basket you’ve ordered from the friendly folks on site.
This place started life as a distillery, making the brandy that this area’s rightly famed for. You can still see many of the workings and have a little sample here or trot up to Cognac itself, half an hour away by car, for lots more tours and tastings. Other ways to fill your days locally include soaking in the thermal baths at Jonzac, pottering through medieval villages or heading off to the seaside, around an hour away.
Back at base, you’ll be spending your nights in a characterful tent with heating and air-con to keep you comfy whatever the weather. A wooden hut a short stroll away houses composting toilets and there's also a wheelchair-accessible amenities block with toilets and showers.

Local attractions
A day trip to Cognac comes highly recommended for anyone fond of a tipple or two – lots of brandy producers are open for tours and tastings here, including household names such as Hennessy and Rémy Martin. If you’re not a fan of the hard stuff, potter through the cobbled streets of the old town, visit the museums or take a stroll along the banks of the Charente river.
Jonzac, 15 minutes’ drive away, is the place to go for a wallow in thermal waters or a day of splashing about at a waterpark, and it’ll take you around an hour to reach the coastal resorts of Royan and Talmont-sur-Gironde for beaches and boat trips.
Also worth a visit is the Paléosite prehistoric centre, 45 minutes away, where you can learn about neanderthal life through films, animations and recreations of ancient living spaces.
