  • Family-friendly site on the banks of the river Bresle
  • Mers-les-Bains 20 minutes’ drive; Abbeville 35 minutes
  • Pool, snack bar and play area; watersports centre nearby
Herd your spouse, the kids and the dog into the car, and head to Camping Les Marguerites, on the banks of the river Bresle, which marks the border between the Somme and the Seine-Maritime departments. This family-friendly spot sits just on the outskirts of the village of Gamaches (five minutes’ drive), a 20-minute drive from the Alabaster Coast, where Mers-les-Bains is known for its Belle Epoque villas. The kids might like to look for marine life in the rockpools at Plage du Bois de Cise (20 minutes) or ride the funicular to the top of the imposing cliffs at Tréport (25 minutes), from where you can admire panoramic views across the English Channel. If the sea is too choppy for your liking, head to the activity centre next door, where activities range from paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing, to land-based pursuits like archery and mountain biking. You can also angle for carp at the Val Doré ponds (20 minutes), in the valley of the Bresle, or go on a seal-watching excursion at Pointe du Hourdel (35 minutes), part of the National Nature Reserve of the Somme. As well as a bar and a snack bar, the site comes with an outdoor pool, a playground and games room, volleyball and tennis courts, table tennis and pétanque. There are also bike-hire facilities, a food shop and a launderette (in addition to a toilet/shower block and a washing-up area). A wide range of activities is arranged in the summer months (July and August), including themed evenings, dance events, sports contests, live music and mountain-biking trips.

What customers say

Clean, well-located site with friendly staff, praised for its setting and cycling. Pitches are spacious. Some found facilities basic, with hot water/toilet issues. Pool was out of order for some, Wi-Fi is poor. Limited evening entertainment; bar noise noted.

Liked The area was lovely shame about site

Disliked Pitch was under trees no sun on the area, toilets and shower blocks basic and not that clean. No clubhouse and pool times closes too early and open late in the morning. Not much to do round you need to drive for things to do.

Liked The staff were very helpful and friendly. There is everything you need within easy reach. Although we stumped them with finding a caravan accessory shop but to be fair we have not been able to find one at all no matter where or who we ask.

Disliked Definitely the facilities need attention. There are spiders everywhere to the point that my wife and daughters could not use them without feeling traumatised.
Other sites facilities are far superior and well cleaned. And the pool could have been a couple of degrees warmer.

Liked Clean site with plenty of trees for shade, essential on really hot and sunny days. There is an excellent cycle route that passes the site that takes you all the way to Le Tréport along the banks of the many lakes and rivers in the area.

Disliked Music from the bar was quite loud on the Saturday night, but if you like this no problem.

Local attractions

Crossed by the River Somme and several smaller canals, Abbeville (35 minutes’ drive) spreads around the Église Collégiale Catholique Saint-Vulfran, with an intricately decorated Gothic façade flanked by two imposing turrets. Green spaces include the manicured Émonville Garden and 60 hectares of wetlands at Park Bouvaque, where you might spot resident and migratory birds. Dieppe (45 minutes) was once a major centre in the production of ivory items, and the museum in the clifftop castle houses a large collection of ivory statuettes, fans and other artefacts. The quays at the harbour are lined with seafood restaurants with outdoor terraces. The National Nature Reserve of the Somme (one hour) is an area of dunes and marshland with nature trails and bird hides. You can explore it by catching the steam train of the Railway Bay of Somme at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme or Le Crotoy.
