If you're fond of a pond, try this park in Picardy right beside a rather large one… Fishing is the main draw on Camping de l'Aigrette’s big body of water, although sunbathing and picnicking on the banks are mighty fine choices too. Tennis and miniature golf are also available in the local area, there's a public pool a couple of minutes' walk away, and hikes can be had straight from the site. But what of the useful amenities nearby? Attichy is a 10-minute walk from the grounds for patisseries and boulangeries when you're (inevitably) after freshly baked French goods. They're all most handy if you want to have food in tow when you swan off snowshoeing, horse riding or tennis playing at the facilities in the Attichy area. More Oise department towns are close by as well, including historic Pierrefonds (15 minutes’ drive) for a turreted château and parapet walk; a 15-minute car journey west, meanwhile, leads to the Glade of the Armistice commemorating both World Wars as it’s here the first one officially came to a halt. The leafy trails of the Forest of Compiègne are slightly south at 10 minutes’ drive and a Louis XV palace to peruse is on the outskirts of Compiègne 20 minutes away. Can’t get enough of castles? The Château de Chantilly’s art selection and equestrian shows are just under an hour. History can also be had – of even more of a stimulating nature – at La Mer de Sable, also about an hour’s journey by car. The oldest theme park in France, this place is popular with small travellers (and pleases mums and dads too with its educational but entertaining shows).

Towns to traipse round in this lush French department include Soissons for the Rubens painting hanging in its 12th-century Gothic cathedral and Compiègne for the aforementioned palace, both 25 minutes’ drive away. Noyon (half an hour) has the Notre-Dame cathedral and Crépy-en-Valois (35 minutes) is where to aim for if you’d like a look at an archery museum. Kids desperately needing to let off steam? Skedaddle over to the Parc de Loisirs Carisiolas and pack them off on the adventure trails 35 minutes away from the site. If they’ve been extra good, the themed rides at Astérix Park can be reached in 50 minutes… For Eiffel Tower times, Paris is an hour and 25 minutes’ drive from Camping de l'Aigrette.
