The fab family-friendly atmosphere should be enough to lure you to Camping de La Fraignaye, but a pool with a waterslide and a setting around a 20-minute drive from Vendée beaches like Plage des Bélugas mean it’ll surely rise to the top of your holiday hit list. While the site’s especially suitable if you’re travelling with the kids, it’s still a go-to if younger guests aren’t in your care. A top spot for relaxing, it has a TV room for lying back and channel hopping – most welcome after days exploring the countryside trails around Pays de la Loire village Saint-Denis-du-Payré (a five-minute walk) on foot and by bike or on the raised paths at the Nature Reserve Michel Brosselin wetlands (half an hour on foot). If you’ll be skipping outdoor adventures in favour of putting up your feet, the spacious green areas at the park are made for lengthy sunbathing sessions and a snack bar’s on site so you won’t have to go far for eats. In the mornings, a bread and pastry delivery’s organised, and supermarkets are 15 minutes’ drive away in La Faute-sur-Mer. And if that all sounds a little too slowgoing…? On-site activities to keep you moving include kids' games, ping pong, billiards, pétanque and table football.

Local attractions

Saint-Denis-du-Payré is a pretty place with a church dating back to the 12th-century and a handful of other historical monuments. Saunter around the scenic streets here, or take a walk out of town towards Nature Reserve Michel Brosselin’s wet grasslands to peer at some 120 wild bird species ranging from redshanks to marsh harriers. If the only watery place you’re keen on visiting is the seaside, Vendée beaches like sandy Plage des Bélugas (20 minutes’ drive) are around La Faute-sur-Mer, a resort known for its mussel farms as well as its 10 kilometres of shoreline. Surfers might want to make their way up the coast to Plage de la Terrière (25 minutes), while budding sailors can take boat trips from Plage Clemenceau (20 minutes). If seafaring sessions aren’t enough to keep the smaller members of your crew satisfied, set them loose on the waterslides at O'Gliss Park or the treetop adventure challenges at Indian Forest instead (both around 20 minutes away). For high-level thrills, the historical-themed Puy du Fou – one of the most well-known amusement parks in France – is an hour and five minutes away.
