Flower-filled gardens, lots of shaded spots and within easy strolling distance of the shops and restaurants in Notre-Dame-de-Riez… doesn’t Camping Le Sableau sound like a very fine spot in which to spend a Vendée break?
And the location starts to sound even better if you’re into fishing or watersports, as the banks of the Ligneron river are a few minutes’ walk away for the former, and the village of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie 15 minutes’ drive away for the latter (or more relaxed beach days, if that’s your idea of suitable amounts of holiday activity).
This being the Vendée, that’s not the only beach at your disposal nearby – the area’s got a generous 200 or so kilometres of coast to explore (excellent news for beach fans/coast walkers). Mixing beach days in with other family outings is pretty popular too: the much-loved Puy du Fou theme park is about an hour and 15 minutes away by car, for starters…
If you’re looking for activity a little closer home, simply stick around on site for swims in the heated pool and games of darts, ping pong, table football and pétanque, or look out for the entertainment that staff frequently lay on for grownups and kids: card game afternoons, kids’ cooking sessions, themed parties and karaoke are among the things that bring guests together.
For eats, Notre-Dame-de-Riez has supermarkets but food’s also available on site at the grocery shop and bar, and you can also order fresh bread and pastries to pick up for petit dejeuner.

Local attractions
This is a part of the world that’s well geared up for family outings: Saint Gilles Croix de Vie (15 minutes’ drive) has a splendid beach, along with sailing, surfing and sand yachting for folk who’d like a bit of seaside activity. Just up the coast (20 minutes from the site), Saint-Jean-de-Monts has a stunning seaside golf course and the wild waterslides of the Atlantic Toboggan waterpark.
Turning backs on the coast, you can send the nippers up into the treetops at the Grand Défi adventure park (25 minutes) or keep them at ground level to meet the animals at Planète Sauvage zoo (45 minutes).
If you’ve got a bit of time sans enfants, pack up fishing kit for an outing to Lac de Jaunay (10 minutes), or follow your nose along the scented trails of the Jardin des Olfacties garden at Coëx's Place de l’Église (20 minutes). There are more pretty gardens in Nantes (an hour), as well as a splendid château, a natural history museum, a flamboyant cathedral and a museum dedicated to local lad Jules Verne.
